Trap him.
Put him in a sealed room.
Leave 1 square open.
Put a channel in that spot between him and a walkway dwarves frequently walk by.
Release the spider from it's cage using a lever.
Profit!

First you want to catch the spider in a cage. I'll leave you to figure out how to do this.

Once you have all offending spiders caged, have a medium-ish room(Mayhaps 10-15 tiles square) dug out with a wall of fortifications dividing the room, with one side having a hole in the fortification wall. Now at the point farthest from the hole on one side, construct the GCS cage. On the other side of the wall put a creature attached to a restraint. Surround the creature with cage traps.

Now when you have a lever release the GCS, it will path to the creature and possibly shoot web at it. Shortly after it will advance towards the creature in an attempt to kill it. However, the traps will get it. Let dwarves collect the silk and reset the GCS cage. Repeat as needed.

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

I absolutely cannot find the image of it, but I like the Gary Larson method, which basically involves putting on a mask and startling the spider...

Using an untamed spider, cage it and install the cage in a 1x1 room. Hook the cage to a lever to release the spider in the room. Make sure the doors are locked or else you might get the mechanism in the doorway. The spider will try and attack anything it can path to, so using the bug that makes pets path through tightly closed (pet impassable) doors, put such a door between it and some chained prey. The spider will shoot the prey through the fortifications. The drawbridge blocks off the spider so that your harvesters aren't startled when they come in the room. I also lock the room when the bridge is down as the children in the fort like to go into the room and look at the spider, releasing it. You can add a cage trap just above and below the fortifications (where the silk can be seen) so that if the spider does get out, you can recapture it safely and automatically. Stick a loom at the back of the room just to speed things up. Since I have webs all over the place outside my fort and don't want my weaver to go wandering about, I'll lock him in there until he's done and then cancel the task.

This method is less labor intensive than Dukes since it just requires pulling a lever and unlocking doors to reset everything. The spider never leaves the 1x1 room if you do it right. (I have 2 doors simply for symmetry - the other is locked so nobody gets the bright idea that the fastest path through the room is through the spider bunker. And yes, the chair graphic in the bridge bugs the crap out of me.) If Toady fixes the pet door pathing bug, this will stop working.

Hm.  Would a spider room like this be useful at stopping thieves?  Rather than collecting the web, just let it pile up throughout the room, so that it gums up any potential intruders?

the dwarven language has no words for "safe" and "efficient".

There are, However, several hundred different expressions that all roughly translate into

You see, booze is a parasite. It lives off dwarves and compels them to dig into the ground so as to create massive defences to protect it's self. It really shouldn't be called dwarf fortress, Booze fortress would make much more sense.

hmmm
once when i captured a GCS i released it in a room where i could feed it by dropping puppies on it, but when i checked he didnt mind the dog when i checked the unit list the GCS was friendly, it wasent tamed, all i did was capture it. is this a bug or am i missing something`?
i then dropped goblins in there to use as a bait, the spider spat web on them and ate them and i collected the web without being exposed for danger.

Just find some dwarf named as manly as possible, then use him as bait and hope that the poor bugger runs towards the hundreds of cage traps you have ready.

You do have hundreds of cage traps, right?

That's about the only way to catch it. Unless you want to do some collapsing dust+knockout trick, but then we're going even more complex with this plan to catch the silky menace.

Hunters will kill it.

For the aboveground GCS, I built a wall some distance from the GCS to force exit through a single tile with a cage trap and then lured it to the trap using a (perfectly agile) dwarf.

For the pit GCS, I dug a staircase down with a 1-wide hallway giving access and trapped the hallway. I tossed tamed pets down at various points between the GCS and the staircase so that if the spider caught and killed the first one, another wouldn't be too far away for it to resume the chase. The animals ran for the staircase and the GCS gave chase.
