Most Prolific Family?
« on: April 04, 2009, 01:52:24 pm »

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I think I've had 12 before but nowhere near as fast. My fortress is 10 years old or so, so that's a dwarf a year. Crazy, yes?

Oh and this is completely unmodded.

Edit: No less than 3 dwarf-days after posting this, Asmel gave birth to a healthy baby boy bringing the total to 11; 8 boys and 3 girls.

Possible theory, both parents share a deity in Osed Numzukthist, a male dwarf associated with fate. All the children do as well but I presume it's inherited by children. Definitely building them a temple.

Only thing of note really about the family is that the youngest daughter died after going berzerk. She wanted stone and cut gems, being a wood-only fort, this was difficult. The stone I was able to get, the gems not so much.

Edit 2: Another baby boy born today (about 8 months after the last).

Edit 3: Baby Girl born today, bringing the total to 13.

PHEW! So Asmel recently was targeted by fate to receive a fey mood. I thought, well I better do everything in my power to help her. She came to the fortress as a gem setter, so sadly I realized she required a jeweler's workshop. She was in need of multiple rough gems, I did not know exactly how many, but quite a few.

I quickly had my miner (I brough 1 pick in case of emergencies, as I said this is a wood only fort for the most part) begin digging out a bit of rock looking for gems.

I had dug a grid to display a good 30x30 stone area but alas no gems were in it. I decided to dig in a straight line into dirt, hoping I found find a stone patch (there is little to speak of, mainly just soil showing throughout the map) and luckily I found some! With 4 moonstones!

Asmel took 3 of them however now she had a final demand...one which I did not wait and see before...METAL BARS!

I didn't even have an anvil, much less a forge. I was struck by a risky but possible solution. Melting down 3 of my 4 steel battle axes used by my woodchopers to clearcut the forests around my fortress. After 1.75 seasons Asmel finally completed her artifact, in the process of which I might add she found the time to give birth to a health baby girl bringing her total to 14.

Asmel is now a legendary gem setter, and a happy mother of 14 (well...sorta happy, 2 children died of fey moods...she's ecstatic though)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I like to think that she decided on a coffin because I delayed in providing an adequite burial place for her son. I also plan to bury her in it, making it the centerpiece for her brood's family crypt.

Not sure yet, don't have a trader set up (been too bust paving my fortress) I'll post the cost once I do though.

Edit: 45,600.

16th child, a baby girl.

17th child, baby boy, born on the first day of spring. Interesting glitch, after ten of a gender, the next is just known as "son" or "daughter" on the relationships page.

18th child born, boy again. Born in the winter of the 17th year, this is the first time that Asmel's family has risen to number more than 1 child for each year the fortress has been in existence.

19th child born. boy.

Toady, how much of DF is inspired by Labyrinth? Is Armok actually David Bowie? Because that would simultaneously be disturbing and awesome.

I say you should lock em all up in their own fortress, using them to build a statue to their own glory.

You'd think they'd get tired of the constant proliferating. I suppose not. I don't think you can even call that a family anymore, that is more like a clan.

You need another equally prolific family, so that they can engage in petty squabbles and rivalries with each other. And so that the two least offensive and youngest members of the family of opposite gender can have a love story.

Can there bee inbreds in DF? I would like to see a fort only populated with breeding with cousins. It would be funny is all. Also you would reach your doom if they ran put of combinations of parents and no new babies were born and also you would get a massive tantrum spiral if the grandad died

Rather than having them directly force you to mine adamantine, I would suggest that they give you strange moods that require adamantine. "Dig out the adamantine or Urist here goes insane and dies" is suitably vicious.

(It occurs to me that you can probably get "Lovecraft" as the random name of your fortress. That's when you know you're screwed.)

So far 3 children have died of failed moods. The parents remained ecstatic as did most of the kids. Guess the fact that they have so many siblings/offspring dilutes the value of em.
