You can get more than one, just not at the start, in case you though I meant you can only have one at a time. Just making sure ;)

Oh good. How big are your lists of weapons going to be?

Also; How will the game play? Will we get structured missions? Will it be text or will there be drawings?

Why the hell can you only have one weapon?  A normal soldier carries a knife, a sidearm pistol, a main battle rifle, and a couple grenades.  Surely if we're supposed to be badass super warriors, we can go all Rambo with akimbo SMGs, a Bowie knife in the teeth, and a spare disposable rocket launcher.  For example.

My question still stands.  Even starting out, I in real life have access to four guns already.  I could carry at least two or three of them, plus a couple knives.

Alright, alright. Wait a second.

Our main goal is to take over? We got no real storyline other than, "Here's a randomly generated country. TAKE OVER GUYS!"

...Yeah, um, my character sheet is pretty much going to be useful here. You militant people need a some Civilian Puppet to bail you guys out and act as the Public Face.

More to the point, you need somebody to fabricate a reason why you are killing in the first place.

Anyway, don't worry about balance. If Aqizzar has 4 guns, it stands to reasons that anyone Aqizzar fights also have 4 guns.

Screw balance.  As pointed out, anything you get hold of, you can keep.  If I can get a truckload of guns after my first missions and throw things completely out of balance, why worry about starting everyone off with such as unrealistic limitation?

While I'm railing against balance, I'd like to say that using anything even suggesting real guns tends to turn the whole thing into an ego-stroking can of worms as everyone starts demanding that their personal favorite weapon acts more like what they insist it can "really do".

If I get my way, effing huge.  And that's just weapons.  You should be able to use gas masks, hazmat suits, NVGs, all sorts of fun goodies if everything can be made to work together.
Also; How will the game play? Will we get structured missions? Will it be text or will there be drawings?
That's a bit harder to answer.  The missions themselves will be decided by squad, though it's quite possible for squads to work together.  Further info should probably come from Vaiolis.

As long as your character can handle the weight, and has proper gear for carting all that stuff around, you can probably carry around as much as you please.  It'll be hard to hold onto a dozen assault rifles with juust lefty and righty, though.

EDIT: Too many replies at once.  I'll edit to answer them.

Don't underestimate the non-combat skills. A good enough persuader can convince the cops to back off, an amazing engineer can put together an underground stronghold, a master hacker can empty bank accounts and earn you millions.  You won't necessarily be the guy racking up fifty kills in as many seconds, but non-combat skills are important for a long-term venture.

As far as balance...  What you can get away with within the game rules is well within balance.  You can go after an army base with nothing but a shotgun and half a dozen rounds.  You can go after some gang-bangers armed with grenade launchers and machineguns.

As for using real weapons...  If you have a better solution, we're certainly willing to hear it.

Keep, but not use. You could just sell the weapons, you know? Or give them to new recruits.

I'm not.

What I am saying is that if we want to take over, non-combat skills are likely going to be ESSENTIAL, assuming that by 'take over', you mean actually overthrow the government and put us into power, instead of just 'heh heh, I'm stealing money and being a criminal gang!'.

You need a politican-type character. The public face of the squad. It's essential. Otherwise, who's ever going to pay attention to a bunch of thugs?

And, erm, I don't really think I care about fun goodies, so, yeah. I'm pulling out. Somebody else be the Politican lackey.

You got the point well enough.  They will be essential, and you don't need to play that character.  You can be whatever you feel like putting together for your character sheet.

As for using real weapons...  If you have a better solution, we're certainly willing to hear it.

Well, if you're interested, I've put up a Rapidshare of a descriptive catalog of slightly less common firearms.  It's not copyrighted - it's a GURPS resource some guy put together.  It only allows 10 downloads, so nobody spam it.

As useful as it is for ideas, it also demonstrates two fundamental problems with using "realistic" weapons.

One, with the guns as is, unless you're running everything through a program or a spreadsheet, you're going to get bogged down with detail in a big hurry.  Take it from me, keep it simple.  Unless those weapon description are just for flavor.

Two, there's thousands of guns in the world, and they all work quite differently even within the same "class".  There are "pistols" better used as small rifles.  There are "machine guns" you can fire one handed.

My suggestion is, dump any suggestion of modeling real guns, and come up with a bunch of generic, plausible weapons within each classification.  Let them do different things, make up names for them, etc.

"Use" is exactly what I'm talking about.  If I manage to steal a loaded SCUD launcher, I'm going to demand being able to fire it.

That's exactly what you'll be able to do.  That's what I was trying to say.  If you can somehow nab the things, then you can use them assuming you can figure out how.

As for your suggestions for the weapon system, we're going to discuss it.  You've brought up good points, so we'll see how it works.

*INTEREST*

I'm not sure what to think about using real guns, on one hand there is an outrageous number of firearms around (and I'm not sure where I put my copy of military small arms  :'(). ON the other hand, it's a lot easier to look at real weapons than to make them up.

I cried a bit when I saw that only current rifle was the mini-14. If I recall, isn't it a modified M-16? I'm sure that someone here knows.

I was aware of that, and it was the only thing because we didn't want to waste time on putting down equipment info when the game isn't even running yet...  But it's all moot now.  We're currently gutting the current weapon system for something less cagey.  You can complain about it now, or when we're done.   ;)

I thought the Mini-14 was a Garand rife with an external clip...

If you want to debate it, take it to another thread, if you will.  This should be about stuff related to the game.
