I don't know about you, but I actually find it quite hard to see if a limb is missing or not on the wounds screen. Personally I blame failing eyesight, but I'm sure some other people have this problem.
Also, losing your hands is just a bit more distressing than losing a leg.
I propose that the colour for a lost limb should be changed to something more noticeable, and that mega-bad thoughts should be had for losing a limb, as it effectively leaves you useless for the remainder of your life, which depending on if you actually get put in a bed, might be quite long now.

Dwarves never recovering from lost limbs is a bug that will be fixed. That handless dwarf should be able to carry on life using his other hand after only a few months of rest.

I agree that it should be easier to see if a limb is lost, though. The wounds list should be sorted by severity of wound first and body part location second.

what if he loses both hands in a freak accident involving the arena's lever puller going to lunch and letting out five wolves and three goblins whilst locking the poor crafter inside.

I'm pretty sure Toady's already covered that for 41a.

I was thinking that a lost limb could be in green or blue or something instead of light grey, which is almost indistinguishable from white for me.

This suggestion is kind of obsolete.  The body part display as you know it probably won't exist.

Lost limbs are dark gray, not light gray.

And yes, as Footkerchief and I already stated, the suggestion is obsolete.

Hmm... how many symbols can a Braille script display? I think it was 2^6. You'd need 8 dots for 256 symbols, right? How about we upgrade it to 8 dots? Then, with a Braille screen, even the blind will be able to play DF! They'd need to plant their face into it though, or strap it to the body or something, to get the whole picture.

A tongue display would probably work better. Anyway, there's already a thread on DF for the blind somewhere around here.

Still one (admittedly minor) problem: color. He/She'd be mashing k or v way more often, just to find out if he's "looking" at a miner or a farmer, a dog or a puppy. 'course, i hear some players have to do that anyway...

Jesus, my sight isn't that bad, it's just hard to distinguish between white and the grey colours on a black background on a screen.
Although a braille screen would be cool.

Change the "color" of dark gray in the init.txt file to something that contrasts with light gray?
