A new way to quit your fortress: Send out settlers
« on: February 17, 2008, 04:07:00 pm »

When your fortress reaches a certain level of prosperity, a new option could appear below abandon, the option to send out 7 dwarves to create a new fortress. You would get to choose any 7 non-noble dwarves from your population and any amount of supplies. The weight of the supplies you could send would be limited based on how many wagons you can create and what pack animals you have to pull the wagons. If you choose this option, then when you start your next fortress you skip the swarf set up screen, you only need to choose a site from the world map.

This option would give players a new goal to work towards that would reward good playing. The only problem might be that starting a new fort with all legendary dwarves would make starting the new fort too easy, but I think that would be okay because you need to work hard on your initial fort to get this reward.

Thirded, especially because as a sandbox game, how easy or hard things are really is up to the player. It would be fun to play one of those uber hard glacier terrifying maps with your new legendary settlers to keep it challenging if you wanted it to be, which would still be harder than taking a bunch of peasants with no skills into a "tropical warm heavily forested food grows on every tile" map. It could even be fun just to take a cuple of champions into a goiblin town although I imagine if this idea is implemented it will be after the army arc which would enable this without abandoning

This is an awesome idea, but similar enough to the Army Arc it probably needs to wait for it.

ARMY ARC: You should be able to control patrols and then armies in dwarf mode. The adventurer should be able to both go with and command armies. In dwarf mode, you should have the option to control your individual patrol members as you would in adventure mode. This comes back to adventure mode in terms of being able to control each member in a party of adventurers you make yourself. You could lead one and the others follow (as it is currently) or control them all, particularly during tense situations where you don't want to count on the AI. Entities should war with each other from bandit and monster raids to full fledged wars. Upset entities could patrol near their sites, leading to new wilderness encounters etc

I like this idea of re-seeding fortresses. Maybe to make it a bit more balance to placate those that want to keep the challenge you could be limited in how far away you could go from your original fort.

It will also help develop the history of the world, if you play multiple forts without generating a new world. The dwarfs will bring their memories, customs, and histories to the new fort. After building 4-5 forts you will start to see an empire budding from your initial endeavor.

What part of the army arc is similar to this? I can see how something like this would make the army arc more fun though - making multiple successful forts for the same civilization would mean more troops which of course leads to profit.

Hmmm, good idea! Sounds really easy to implement, too:
-Selected dwarves exit the map
-Save their profiles somewhere
-When starting a new game, add a third option besides "embark now" and "prepare carefully", something like "join expedition": this brings you to a screen where you see all the teams of dwarves you have sent out, and can select one to embark with.

It would be fun as well to send out a large group of soldiers this way, and use them to reclaim a fortress. You could even send them out, abandon the fortress, and come back with them to take it back!

Perhaps even merge Adventurer mode and Dwarf mode by controlling the dwarves on their journey to parts unknown, like a small army or adventuring party? Like Oregon Trail mixed with equal parts Civalizarion and Baldur's Gate? This could make it interesting to found small mobile mining groups, warbands, road builders, ect. Maybe even place the fort under the computer control and allow the victorious heros or bedraggled failures to return to their homes for suitable fame or derision? And any loot they collect on the way could be added to the fortress's wealth.
