OK, so I just realized I should've searched this first, and I've come to the conclusion that this is due to missing files in the save folder...

I'm in the habit of deleting regions I don't use anymore...is it possible if I accidently deleted an old save (like SPR-Region01 or however it's named) of the region I'm currently playing, that this could cause this issue?

If you only delete save folders (and never actually look inside the  folders themselves) then you shouldn't be able to create a broken save. Each folder is self-contained.

This error is most commonly caused when you terminate Dwarf Fortress without saving--whether that's a power failure, a hung game, or pressing ctrl-alt-del and terminating the process.  Don't do that.  If you do that, restore from a backup save...every single time.  Otherwise, this bug will bite you a few months or years into the future.

Ah, I believe I have killed the process before...it's such a pain to close the game from within itself :'(

But if that's what's causing it, I'll make sure to stay away from that. Thanks.

Sooo...thinking about it...I love this fort, it's the first one that seems to be working out to the degree that I want it to, so if I abandon the fort and reclaim it, do you think that would be sufficient to allow me to keep the fort without the corruption?

Nope.  Nemesis load errors mean that some important units living outside your fortress (like diplomats, kings, etc) have had their data disappear.  Once the data is gone, that error tends to happen on events like the caravan coming.  That error pretty much means that world is hosed, I'm afraid...
