MIT Developing first DF capable CPUs

"'In electronics, we're always trying to increase the frequency,' Palacios says, in order to make 'faster and faster computers' and cellphones that can send data at higher rates, for example. 'It's very difficult to generate high frequencies above 4 or 5 gigahertz,' he says, but the new graphene technology could lead to practical systems in the 500 to 1,000 gigahertz range."

I'm the only person that finds it disturbing that an ASCII game rips modern computers a new one.

I'm sure that'll get fixed though.

If I went int the future 10 years, I could still bring a computer to its knees running DF. The difference is that in the future, I will be using entire regions and bump the total pop to 1000 or something.

Well, my 3.6ghz Pentium 4 runs Inkdepths, a 202 dwarf fort, at about 20-30fps.
even the 1000ghz one would be able to manage about 300 times that.
That's about sixty thousand dwarves.
can you *imagine* the mess.

This makes me want farming to become intensely difficult and trade to become vital. Thousands of dwarves dying of starvation because of a seige would be awesome.

I somehow suspect that the realtion between CPU speed and max number of playable dwarves is not linear.

It definitely is not. The relationship between Floating Points Per Second, or FLOPS, and the number of possible Dwarves is much more strongly correlated. My 3 gigahertz AMD Phenom II can handle a 200 pop fort with around 50 to 100 frames per second depending on the amount of activity, even though it's technically slower in frequency tan Maggarg's.

I don't know. Source? Either way, the game will use much more CPU power in the future (probably), because Toady will implement enormous amount of new features in the upcoming years.
PS.
Baughn's improved DF code helped a lot to those people, who have older computers. There is no real difference between 40d and 40d11 if you have a decent system.

yeah, but what if the optimization is similar in difficulty to multithreading, and he can't do it without scrapping all of his DF code?

yeah, but what if the optimization is similar in difficulty to multithreading, and he can't do it without scrapping all of his DF code?

Can you recap what multithreading is for us dumb people?
