Your fortress attracted no migrants this year. Also, wells.
« on: March 30, 2009, 04:56:20 pm »

My fortress attracted no migrants this year.  It's the fortress' first year, but we've done pretty much everything else I've ever done in a fortress' first year.  Will migrants spawn if there's no connection to the home civilization?  Did I somehow pick a spot they can't reach?  If this fortress is boned, I'd like to know ASAP so I can start anew without spending lots of time on a doomed fortress.

Also, would digging a tunnel from the floor of a river to the level below a well, like this:

   W                                           RRRRRRR
   | |                                           | |
   |=====================|

With W being the well, R being the river, and the tunnel being the tunnel, each row being a Z-level, would the water pressure flood my fortress?

No, its just not always guaranteed even if you do 'this' and 'this' gets migrant's in 1 fort, it won't work in all.

But water can't go above its original height from a river so it won't flood.

Waterpressure question = Yes, I am rather sure that if the well is on the same level as the actual water, it will flood.

Migrants = You probably just got unlucky, I usually don't get migrants my first year, sometimes not even in my second.

Check out my fortress at Whiteoak for a completely unambiguous example.  I have filled the well directly from the brook.

Nice shameless self promotion, but...

His map shows that the well is on the same level as the river, not the channel. The channel is one two below the river, and the well is on the exact same level, as the river. The exact same level. which would be like channeling above ground from the river to the well.

Oh, the dwarves will have water alright...

Also, would digging a tunnel from the floor of a river to the level below a well, like this:

Code: [Select]
W                   RRRRRRR
| |                 | |

With W being the well, R being the river, and the tunnel being the tunnel, each row being a Z-level, would the water pressure flood my fortress?
Use [ code ], pls.
If R means x/7 of water then yes, make galoshes. 'Dwarven well' is just polite name for hole in the floor.

It won't flood, assuming that R is above ground "open space" and the tiles underneath that is the actual water (which is probably quite likely since rivers are always 2 z-levels).

Meh, sometimes the migrants just get lost. I'm sure you'll be knee-deep in cheese makers by next year, don't fret.

As for water, you know it gains pressure going down, and loses it coming back up; if you keep your well above the level of the river, you should be fine (I think). If not, just put in a lock to allow you to set the threshold of water volume allowed into the well bottom.

Remember that water only does the pressure thing to the level below itself.

Toady apparently didn't want a little 3/7 tile of water jumping back and forth through different top tiles of water pressure stuff so luckily we don't flood our forts like that.

Though, if you wanna open up other options without machinery to regulate your water just make the water go diagonally somewhere near the end- pressurized water only works in the straight directions.
