I forgot to get bauxite in the beginning.

Is there any hope for me with making a magma-safe floodgate for an Obsidian Farm?

You've got plenty of options left, actually. You can pump magma with a wooden screw pump so long as you keep the stuff away from the walkable (rear) tile. Also, glass furniture is magma-safe.

Ask not what the Dwarfs can do for you...
But ask.... why are they drunk all the time?

I believe it will hold it back, until it's actually opened at which point it will be destroyed. Anyway, you should be able to request bauxite from the dwarven liaison. If not, you can make a de facto floodgate. Along the magma flow before it reaches your obsidian farm, channel out the ceiling on one tile. When you want the magma to stop, pump water on to it. When you want the magma to flow, channel out that one tile again.

just use a screwpump (although not wooden, for some reason they -will- still burn, even without magma on the rear tile) as your 'floodgate'. glass/stone/metal will all hold the magma back when it's off, and your farming channels will fill much faster if the magma is being pumped in rather than just flowing past a gate.

The floodgate will be fine. However, when you open it, the mechanism will melt, which will deconstruct the floodgate.
