I think I can answer that for Toady'. Tarn was inspired to create Armok while playing the games Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor and Battlecruiser 3000.
Despite all of his effort and determination, he has STILL not been able to create an even buggier game than those two and has since given up this lofty dream.
When he realized he could not top PoR for bugginess(and the developers of PoR weren't even TRYING!) he decided to take Armok in a new direction...a direction that is becoming apparent with each new release.

Armok will one day be the greatest carb-counting, weight loss sim ever developed!

  :p

Oh and congratulations and happy birthday!

I was really going for that Outpost feel too -- you know, an unfinished buggy game that promised a ton of detail and expounded on the detail at length, where at the same time I don't remember if the trucks from the manual were even implemented.

I can't think of any game I'd call a source of inspiration of the top of my head.  Armok started as a Basic text game around 1990 and evolved from there.  Hmmm...  I can't think of any games that the first text game is like (it was a simple hack and slash, closest inspiration was just pen-and-paper DND or something, there weren't any spatial components), and after that ideas were just applied in a piecemeal fashion as they came up.  I suppose you could look at one thing or another in the game and see influences from the games I've played over the past many years, but in the end, Armok was born out of a desire for something different.

Thanks for reminding me of Battlecruiser, I would have had more fun if I had just burned my 30€

You payed for it with Euros? That must have been a bit progressive. Or have they really been around that long now?

Ive never heard of battlecruiser or outpost im afraid. But I was one of those lucky few to have bought Pools of Radience for 50 bucks and not be able to play it. Go on the forums and ask "why won't my mouse work?" and the devs say "your fault, go away". So I did. I uninstall the game.... MISTAKE!!! Bye-bye harddrive.

Ah... Armok back in it's good old text form... Yes, the funist part was starting bar fights and hiring drunks... Good memories... Wow, it just gets buggier, and buggier... Oh what the hell, the bugs are half the fun of playing it anyways... At this stage at least. I think you should bring back the bar fights and the drunks!

Bar fights and drunks? Doesn't sound terribly similar to the armok I played a month or so ago. I did see some bunnies though.

Armok is very unfinished...  if you look at the future pages you can see some of the things the text game had, although it wasn't as impressive as I want Armok to be.  It was fun to hire drunks though.  And then go try to take out a dragon without letting them weapons.  Unfortunately the text version doesn't compile anymore.  It was written back in the day when you had to worry about XMS/EMS memory and all that, and rewriting the code is too much of a project to be justified.  I might as well work on Armok.

The dwarf game is text, and it will be Armokish in certain ways.  All is not lost.  At least until we drop C for some other, more modern language.

I read some of the history of Battlecruiser on HOTU.  The marketing campaign sounded special.

I remember the Battlecruiser ads were on the back of PCZone - which was a bit of a bad boy mag then - and there were multiple letters complaining.  :)

To be honest, I've some sympathy for that silly guy - he's got a lot of flak just for being delusional over his own abilities.

Well, delusional over his own abilities and then selling a bunch of people a hyped up product, essentially stealing their money.  Even making them wish they had burned it.  Although what I read made it seem like it was partially the company's fault.  At the same time, I don't care if he later put it out as freeware if they still kept all the money from the original debacle.  Actually, I'm not certain of the specifics, so I'm withholding judgment.  I might have bad information.  Not that this is high on my priority list :)

The dwarf game is a text game I'm working on since I got sick of Armok for the time being.  I'll get back to Armok once I finish it.  I don't know when that will happen, but I'm having fun.  Fortunately for people that wanted to see Armok get finished, there will be a lot of spill-over.  I feel better about the practicality fluid flows already, for instance, having drowned and incinerated my dwarves many times.
