Most difficult terrain to start in?
« on: March 30, 2009, 02:38:12 pm »

Well? The title is pretty much my question.

I currently have a ludicrously defensible position in my current fortress, things are going well. The challenge is starting to dwindle. So i'm going to keep this as a pet fortress.

I want to up the ante and try a more difficult area. What do you all suggest?

I've been wondering, can you play multiple fortresses in the same world at the same time?

I'm pretty sure not. I think it would be quite awesome if we could.

This is a list of parameters that make Dwarf Fortress more challenging:

1. No renewable wood. (i.e. forests)

2. No contact with friendly civilizations. (i.e. Humans, Dwarves, Elves, sometimes Goblins)

3. No renewable water. (i.e. streams, brooks, rivers, oceans, underground rivers)

4. No magma. (i.e. magma pipe, magma pool)

5. No water. (i.e. lakes, pools, underground pools, ice)

6. Hidden Fun Stuff.

7. No sand.

8. Extreme Temperature (i.e. freezing glacier, scorching desert)

9. Aquifers.

10. Extreme Cliffs (i.e. vertical drops, totally flat)

11. Evil Surroundings (i.e. Sinister, Haunted, Terrifying)

12. No Flux.

Combine these parameters to make the game more challenging.  Combine all of them to make the game very challenging.  When you get bored, modify your game or download modifications to make the game even more difficult.

The coast of an evil ocean... you get skeletal whales crawling onto land to eat people. Skeletal. Whales.

Get me a goblin fortress right next to an evil ocean, an evil swampland, and an evil tropical grassland. You will be attacked by skeletal whales, gobbos plus demon, beakdogs, and skeletal elephants. Simultaneously.

Bonus points if this is one of those crazy maps where the temperature gets so hot trees ignite for half the year. Then you have to dig straight down as fast as possible before being attacked by burning skeletal whales, gobbos plus demon, beakdogs, and skeletal elephants. Everything is ten times more awesome when it is on fire. Even more bonus points if you dig straight down into the HFS using the reveal cheat program and release a heaping load of FUN into the already insane, flaming carnage.

I believe that after a point you have to be one of those people that delights in being in pain. Masochist, maybe?

Sadist, mostly. I delight in seeing other people in pain.
Really... what other reason is there to play DF?

Bah, these challenges are just that: Challenges. We need something that will die off quickly. And as we all know, nothing dooms a fortress more than boredom.

Thus I propose a fortress with one tile of growable soil, with the rest being mountains and the corner opposite of the soil tile containing all the important features except for ones that grant water.

Actually, making a fortress dependent on the underground river would be interesting.

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

Tapping the cave river for water isn't that hard. Just carve fortification 2 tiles away from the river, then channel one level above and one tile near the river. Wall off the tunnel above quickly.
