Think of the other things.  Desert maps could have Egyptian-style FUN STUFF.

Swamps would probably have undead FUN STUFF

Forests would have...  Ancient Tree Spirits?  FR-style Myth Whatchamacallit ruins?

Hills could have... eyes(lame)

Tundra could have some kind of ice elemental, that keeps the tundra cold.

And ancient blood-god temple ruins under the jungle, guarded by the lizardmen undead warriors =).

Perhaps have small cult cells operating in towns, worshipping these deities.  :O!  There could even be an Innsmouth!

Hmm, semi-buried ruins underneath jungles and deserts? That seems fitting. I'm not sure about the magical tundra monster, though.

Also, someone has discussed more HFS somewhere else, but that was primarily about more kinds of it, not placing it in other places.

FUN things are way too friendly, as is.  I mean sure just about every feature has horrifying monsters that will kill you.  But they usually have good features too!  Like plant spores, or magma that's fun to use, or FUN STUFF itself.  Even the chasm reveals lots of layers of goodies!

There needs to be more things that kill you.  Sinkholes, quicksand, general things that really like collapsing if you dig through them.  Pockets of bad air that don't do anything good for you at all.  Tar pits...nah, too useful.  Forgotten graves of less FUN things, well, just small scale horrifying monsters that you dig into, get squished by, kill, and then are done with.  I'd like it if there were minor challenges at small depths, and bigger challenges at deeper depths.  If you go and dig ten levels down right at the start, and set something bad loose when you only have seven dwarves, you deserve what you GET.  And no, you shouldn't always have warning, either.

So bury semimegabeasts or very small ambushes or something.  Or even just little chambers that constantly create miasma.

I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to disagree with the whole: "ZOMG! It's under milions of tons of rock." thing. No, it's always 15 z-levels below your embark point. So, in a low area like a forest, it's well below the distance even in the mountains.

Given the spheres that HIDDEN FUN STUFF has, it makes sense for their to be different kinds of HFS for different spheres.

I like that!!

Big HFSwould require lots of programming by the Toady One.  BUT, small little pockets of fun would be great!

Ideas:

a. A small chamber that randomly occurs in layer type X.  Inside is a demon or army of undead.  Of course the surrounding "jail" materials would be valuable.

b. Random empty caves.  Digging your city and you run across a giant system of empty cave ripe for the taking.

c. Half buried ruins.  Picture a tower half buried or collapsed.

d. Innsmouth...

e. Ancient Battle sites, Burial Grounds, etc.

Why would Innsmouth be underground?

Pockets of bad (miasma-like + unconsciousness/wounds) or explosive (FWOOM) air would be pretty cool. Have to find a way to get the air out without making things worse.

I love the idea of finding buried temples or sub-biomes a la Journey to the Center of the Earth.

I like there ALWAYS being the possibility of "digging too deep" and unleashing nightmares that you just probably can't win against, it was one thing I liked in 2D, that certain doom always waiting for you.

Innsmouth wouldn't be underground.  It's just another example of the kind of HFS you could put into the game.
