HIDDEN FUN STUFF out of the mountains
« on: February 16, 2008, 05:23:00 pm »

Why are chasms, HIDDEN FUN STUFF, cave rivers, and cave lakes only in the mountains? They should be everywhere else, too. Just rarer, I guess.

And maybe there should be differents kinds of HIDDEN FUN STUFF in different biomes...Think we can all throw some ideas about it, though of course if they are actually implemented it won't be a surprise for us when we see them :-)

Probably because dwarves usually live in mountains and you're not supposed to be able to play as anything else yet.

It is fairly reasonable for the interesting features to be found outside of mountain ranges.
Small chasms would be like sink holes... And cave rivers/lakes/pools could be found where aquifers border non-aquifer areas.

Yea, how about "Sunstone" instead of "Hidden Fun Metal" and "Underground Forest" filled with live trees and treated as an outside instead of "Hidden Fun Thing"

Journey to the center of the earth style!

Im pretty sure HFS outside of mountain tiles has been discussed at length somewhere else.

Swamps and deserts in particular seem like perfect places for Hidden Fun Things, though obviously in different forms than the mountain ones...

Also ruins.

HFS is sealed in adamantium and buried under mountains.   It's less 'safe' to stash HFS in, say, a shallow grave in some meadow.

But HFS isn't the focus of the game.

It's possible to put HFS anywhere you damn well want it...  I think it just has to do with a few of the specific tags for raw adamantine in the matgloss file.

Yeah, I think I made a thread about this a few months back... some ocean fun stuff would be cool.  As is weird things coming on shore from the deep.  :)

Indeed, the particular brand of HIDDEN FUN STUFF we've got at the moment is best suited for storage under millions of tons of dirt and rock. I agree with the suggestion that there be MORE KINDS of HIDDEN FUN STUFF. Ancient unmapped ruins crawling with undead or other hostiles, crypts full of valuables that are ALSO crawling with undead or other hostiles, etc.

It shouldn't be so overdone that there's FUN STUFF on every single square, but just enough to add some delicious variety to the challenges your dwarves can overcome.

Non hidden fun stuff is cool, too.   I'm sure that as more features get added in, HFS will be less 'a big deal'.

Now I think it should be over done just becouse I still haven't found any demons or cave rivers despite turning 5 mountains into swiss cheese. HFS is surprising un-fun if you can't ever find it.
