Starting War
« on: March 29, 2009, 04:12:18 am »

Hey guys,

I'm wondering how I could start a war with my elf neighbors. They're housing is in the same area as mine. I can see them all over my Southern border and want to pick a fight. I'm just not sure how to go about it.

Any ideas?

I'm not sure how to get my squads to attack a race that isn't hostile to me. How do I force say my axedwarf to take a swing at their traders?

You can't. Be creative, via bridges, water, hostile animals...

Gotcha. What I've tried so far is to single out an elf, surround him with channels, then build a catapult in front of him. My legendary siege operator flings rocks at him, but they go right through/around him.

I'll try drowning that same elf.

Good idea. But catapults have an arc, even though you can't see it. Try a ballista arrow and if that doesn't work, magma cannot fail.

Magma - the duct tape of DF.

If duct tape burned everything in its path, inspired Da Vinci like ingenuity and God like destruction.

I've always done it by chopping down as many trees as I can. Also, can't you cause them to attack if you seize their goods so many times? I always seize two or three things from them, but I've yet to be attacked because of it. I thought I read somewhere that eventually they will though?

Attacking/looting caravans won't provoke anything.  I believe you have to kill a diplomat (or otherwise let the diplomat die on your map).  That's hard to do with elves though, because unlike humans they don't send a diplomat every year.  So yeah, cut down lots of trees and wait til their environmental activist shows up, then drop him into the moat while he's crossing a bridge or whatever.

This was a couple of weeks ago now, But I had a diplomat following my miner/mayor/trader person who channeled out the new magma channels. Apparently dwarves doesn't check if there's neutral units where they channel, and the diplomat went into the magma. I had three sieges before the first one was over... Oh, since there were sieges it must've been the human diplomat or something... but it should work with elves too I think.

Elves don't siege. They send ambush parties. There's a tag you can give them to make them siege though.

Since elves don't bring a liason, i guess the only sure way to piss'em off is cuttings AND stockpiling +100 wood logs. After that they'll send their version of greenpeace to warn you, THEN they start attacking.
