somehow a rotten dog meat roast got on top of a bed in my barracks and is causing clouds of miasma.  i can't figure out how to remove it.  I tried designating it for dumping it.  That didn't work.  I removed the bed.  I un-designated the room as a barracks.  There is plenty of room in my refuse pile.  Any ideas on why this can't be moved?

It's probably because a soldier owns it and has forgotten to stuff it in his backpack, and now he'll never do it because it's rotten, obviously. Does it have an owner when you select it while loo'k'ing?

In any case, it should rot eventually to nothing. Otherwise, you can wait for a dwarf to dump it.

Probably best to block off the room with a door (this will hold in the miasma) and let the fool who let the food rot sleep on some random floor for awhile. That'll teach 'em.

Btw you can check the ownership of an item by examining it, just hit k to go into examine mode, move to the roast and select it, then click enter and that should open up the description.

If I had to throw a wild guess, it's a property of a wrestler who, while training, got their backbag grabbed. I've had that happen so often it's not even funny.

Protip: Give backbags to soldiers after they've become as good of wrestlers as you want them to be and give them actual weapons, not a moment before. Otherwise, food everywhere, rotting, and no one will do anything about it.
