So, I'm relatively new to this game, so for the first time I stumbled upon a vein of HFS you can imagine I was pretty excited. I was only about two years into my new fortress, and because I'm playing with the Orcs mod and in a relatively terrifying area, most of my focus has been on creating a safe world for my dorfs to live in. That being said, I decided to assign one of the Craft places thingies to extract metal strands, just to see where it would lead.

My first artifact was this crummy little cup made out of oak with bands of maple, and rings of birch and oak. Total value: 4800.

Boring.

A few years later one of my dorfs took over a clothier's shop. I think, shoot, I don't have any cloth for him. So he wanders over to one of stockpiles and finds some strange shiny bluish material. I get excited and check my fortress value. At the time it was only about 100,000 (a paltry sum, I know). When the artifact is finished, my fortress value is over 1 million. Here it is:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

90% of my fortress's value rests in (what I assume to be) a shoe.

Edit: Thanks LegoLord, no point spoiling the game for others.

You all do know that we everytime we gen a world in DF, a new universe is created somewhere, and everytime we delete a save we kill a whole world?
Aye, we are Armok, god of blood, evil, villager gutting, fortress building, legend making and elf thongs.

It's a single one, actually.  A pair exists as two separate items in DF.

Also:  Put a spoiler in the title of the thread, and call
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
HFS.

My first experience with
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
as it applies to feys resulted in an
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
anvil, worth over 1 million dwarfbucks.  I used it to make my first magma forge, which caused its value to count twice: once in furniture (cause it was an anvil) and once in architecture (cause it part of a building).  So basically one artifact resulted in a +2million dwarfbuck increase in my fort's value.

Edit:  Oops.  Didn't put spoilers around my own stuff.

oh, and legolord? how many immigrants did that get you(insert interrobang here)

I can't remember.  It was a lot, I know that.  About as many as you can get in one wave, I'm pretty sure.  FPS suffered after awhile, too.

Is it really a spoiler for anyone anymore?

Given the number of Escaped Lunatics popping up, saying they've just got into this and love it, I'd say that's definitely a yes.

So, is it the presence of the HFS wall, or what you find IN a HFS that is the spoiler?

Adamantine isn't HFS.  HFS is well... Hidden fun stuff, so it refers to something else that'll do your fort in.

Adamantine won't, in and of itself cause any problems for your fort.

Personally, I really don't give a shit about spoilers.  I've never dug that deep anyway because I can't stick with my forts beyond a few years.  I just ended up looking up HFS on the wiki to see what it was.

Fixed.

Spoiler it Nitrousoxide.  Someone, finding out about
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
could look up where to find it, find out what's in it, and then have it ruined for them.  Not everyone has such short forts.

I'd certainly call it fun stuff, and it's hidden.

Except Adamantine isn't HFS.  HFS is

not Adamantine.

I belive
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
used to fall under the HFS blanket back in 2D.  It did not show up in any of the manager item possibilities or the forge "what do you wanna work with" list until you actually discovered the stuff.  Weave metal thread (or whatever it's called) and the strand extractor jobs were also nonexistant until you discovered the stuff.

However when z levels came around it also opened up metals and reactions to be moddible.  And given the possibility of non
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
metal cloth the ability to work with such metals needed to be availible off the bat.

I personally call the metal $HFS$ and the other !!HFS!!.  The $HFS$ is not as secret as the !!HFS!! but detailed information should not be thrown around haphazardly nonetheless.

And back on topic, I had an artifact sword made of the $HFS$ once.  It was pretty awesome.  One of my champions had it equipped while I abandoned so I just had an adventurer go find him to kill him and loot the sword.  After 6 adventurers being destroyed by the demi-god, a crossbower got a lucky heart hit and retreived it.  Then he promptly lost it forever by dying to a wolf ambush on the overworld.  You'll never find something lost to an overworld ambush.  Its like looking for a wooden needle in a haystack the size of Rhode Island.

All kinds of HFS have been turned into XxHFSxX by this thread, imo.
