Make it so game won't autopause?
« on: March 27, 2009, 10:25:06 pm »

I'd like to build a nice functioning fort and leave it running for 12-24 hours real time by itself...but with autopause this is of course impossible.

There are third party utilities that can turn off some announcements, but for the most part, the game will auto pause at important events.

Alternatively, you could implement a solution that inputs a space bar key press every so often.

I think in the next version many (probably not all) of the events that autopause will be disable-able

If you need to press a button once in a while to prevent it from pausing.  Try AutoHotkey, it's a good program that I sometimes use to store the control sequence to make a complicated bedroom.

One of the toads decided to go for a swim in the moat - presumably because he could path through the moat to my dwarves. He is not charging in, just loitering in the moat.

The toad is having a nice relaxing swim.
The goblin mounted on his back, however, is drowning.

Cool.
I have had a couple fortresses I wanted to raze and I would much rather have left them running unattended than simply "abandon fortress."

As far as the auto-pause notifications: those are annoying when they come in bunches, are for the same thing, or you can do absolutely nothing about them.

At the very least, you should be able to disable/enable all autopauses. I can see where a full list of notifications would take some time/work/space.
Or maybe "Autopause for all but dwarf death."

One suggestion/alternative: allow announcements to display on the game screen and stay there, in lieu of an autopause. They only clear when you hit space bar, or any key, or whatever. Again, this only occurs if you have disabled autopause.

Also, there is typically a LOT of wasted screen space to the right below the key inputs. That black space could be used for text/announcement updates with a time stamp.

I know there are programs that will look at a section of the screen, compare it to a screenshot you've supplied, and then perform some action when the pictures match. Or, conversely, when they don't match.

You could tell it to look in the top corner, and as soon as the *Paused* image pops up you could tell it to hit spacebar.

I'm trying to remember the name of one of them. They were very popular back at the turn of the century, when some companies were trying to turn a profit by paying you to look at and interact with pop-up ads.

Having AHK press space once in a while would probably only make it worse.

This is brilliant! I've been looking for a way to have DF run indefinitely on its own as well. Of course, that would very likely end in disaster soon, but it's a nice option to have.

If you dont mind using it. Im sure the Dtil utility (somwhere on the site, I cant remember ><) has an unpause function. Also has a sepreate function for just removing the "You have just struck...." pauses.

Yea, they're pretty neat. I'm sorry I can't give you a name of one of the programs. I did a little googling for about three minutes last night, but I haven't come up with anything yet.
If you happen to find the name of one, let us know. I'll do the same.

Guys, autohotkey does this as well as the simple keystroke macros you all use...
