Dwarves don't really take distance into account when there are rocks above or below them, z-level wise.

Because they would haul rock five thousand miles, and then they would haul rock five thousand more.

as far as a dwarf is concerned, a rock 9 z levels below them is closer than a rock 10 tiles away in the same room. stupid I know but whaddayagonnado

you could always make a 1-tile wide rock-stockpile directly around the workshop

I actually just use a dump zone right in the middle of my stone related craft area, and assign all my stones for dumping. It makes it so I can't dump other things, but its ok.

Yes, Skelodwarf has the right idea.
In the event that that issue gets fixed, I recommend making a stone stockpile with the stone type you want (bauxite? obsidian? marble? whatever) in a room with a door. Also make the mason's shop in there.
Make a task in the workshop and when the mason arrives, lock him in with all the stone until he's done. Just don't forget about him. He'll be needing food and drink eventually.

I used to do this with a chef in a room full of cheese, quarry bush leaves, dwarven syrup and alcohol.

Another way is to simply construct your workshop as two levels, one for the workshop itself and the other right below it for the input resources.  I always build my workshops that way and beside the first queues task (where they pick the resource nearest their location), the dwarf only need to walk down/up stair to get the next resource.

One of the toads decided to go for a swim in the moat - presumably because he could path through the moat to my dwarves. He is not charging in, just loitering in the moat.

The toad is having a nice relaxing swim.
The goblin mounted on his back, however, is drowning.

Nuts. Beaten to the joke.  :-\

While it's been previously eluded to, I believe the answer to your question is

Just to be the dwarf who hauls a rock 5,000 miles to fall drunk at your door.

Frankly, because they're idiots.

Seriously, that's the answer.

Maybe it was on the way from where they were before the job to the masonry workshop.

Because they would haul rock five thousand miles, and then they would haul rock five thousand more.

Just to be the dwarf who hauled rock 9,500 miles then went for a drink.

Toady, how much of DF is inspired by Labyrinth? Is Armok actually David Bowie? Because that would simultaneously be disturbing and awesome.
