i start up df, load my current fort, play for a little bit, then it just crashes
i looked at the task manager and it says my CPU usage never got over 30% and memory never got over 54%

Maybe it's tied to some sort of event that's happening at your fort. What date is it roughly when it crashes?

Or is it happening a set amount of time playing the game?

it just turned summer when it started, last time i played i was able to get to autumn.

ps i have 11 dwarves 5 adult 6 children 23 wardogs all assigned to my adults 53 assorted cows and dogs in a cage a cow/bull breeding pair outside of a cage, and 5 wild muskox

my comp specs are 2.4 gig quad core processor and 3 GB ram

ive been playing for 5 in-game years
also all dwarves died in world gen

Does it happen at every season change, with NEMESIS UNIT LOAD FAILED message?

Is it weather related? Turning off weather has helped me past a few crashes.

What OS do you have, also which DF version have you been using?

the crashes are recent and it sometimes crashes in the middle of the season
i'm in tundra where it is almost constantly snowing and as i said its new
i'm using windows vista
the version of DF im using is 0.28.181.40d

i dont see any thing that looks like its from this map just alot of path fails and loop path fails for creatures that arent in the map

When it crashes, what happens? Does the screen just go dark, or does a message box pop up, and if so, what does it say?

the screen goes white then a pop up appears saying Dwarfort.exe has stopped working with the "problem details" revealing this:

That "problem details" information is nearly useless.  Not your fault, I know.  But it doesn't tell what instruction went bad, much less why.  I Googled on "StackHash_fd00" and on "ea6f5fe8924aaa756324d57f87834160", both have lots of hits representing lots of different programs' crashes.  So whatever that huge number is (I think it's a SHA1 digest of some part of memory), it's not unique to DF.

If you generate an entirely new world and start a new fort, does a similar error occur?  Don't worry, doing so won't affect your current fort.

I half suspect that DF is making your CPU overheat.  Did your computer come with any temperature monitoring tools?  If not, maybe you see if the motherboard manufacturer's website has one.

i've been playing on another fort while i try to figure this out and its going fine

If another fort is working fine, then it's probably not hardware-related.
