Dwarven Funerals / Visiting Graves
« on: March 27, 2009, 06:05:01 pm »

Perhaps you could designate a tomb in such a way that off-duty dwarves would gather and have a funeral for the deceased at some point shortly after it is filled. It could be associated with a small positive thought along the lines of "Urist McBereaved felt some closure at a friend's funeral", perhaps increasing depending on the quality of the tomb.

Likewise, unhappy dwarves would occasionally visit the tombs of lost friends/family. and perhaps receive a positive thought by leaving a small trinket that the deceased would have liked (that is if the game can stills tracks a dead dwarf's preference) or perhaps something the visitor likes. (dwarven equivalent of flowers on the grave)

Somewhat related, it might be cool if the negative thoughts friends of a dying dwarf received were lessened (or amplified) by the way in which the dwarf died. i.e. a champion military dwarf dies after slaying 20 goblins, they wouldn't be quite as sad, he died in glorious combat. or a legendary miner gets caught in a cave in, he died doing what he loved. but a farmer starves to death, what a senseless death! etc etc

The funeral seems logical.

And the visiting the graves would make me pause before upending caskets and sending the bones to the crematorium...

The final bit about how they die requires really too much programming.. But I do like the idea as well.

All in all..  Good work.. +3 respect points.

So after my dungeon master dies his tomb will be full of sceptres too? Sounds good. I like the ideas presented and having dwarves visit tombs and getting happy thoughts from all the nice decorations is an added bonus.

As for making the game track how dwarves have died I don't think it would be too complex to program, a champion dying in combat for example seems to be already somewhat tracked as my engravers like to engrave battle scenes. Miners dying in cave-ins would be slightly harder if they die from injuries, would it need to track the source of injuries or is this not the same, doesn't seem quite the same as the glory of dying on the battlefield?

Offerings left at graves might become a clutter problem unless some removal mechanism is added, perhaps once Dwarven priest are added to the game they will be tasked with removing the offerings after a sufficient time has passed, they throw away anything that rotting (like flowers) and keep or recycle other objects (Dwarven Salvation Army?).

Yeah, I've always been surprised the game doesn't have funerals already.  It's basically just a party, except at a +Basalt Coffin+ instead of a +Limestone Statue+.

The tone of the funeral could be affected by personality; a particularly somber dwarf will organize a quiet viewing and respects, while an outgoing dwarf might plan a roof-shaking booze-filled wake for a departed friend. Then, you could expand this for extreme personalities, and things like Goblins will have some kind of combination of an open-casket showing and a buffet. Oh! or Gremlins or anybody else with "trickster" traits will just use the corpses of friends to play one last great joke on somebody.

The Dwarven Funeral should be a Party!

Well... Mechanically (though some cultures do basically throw feasts as their funerals) so they should take up a room to have a party in.

The party idea doesn't work perfectly when you consider the sorts of intricate twisty turny catacombs some people make. That doesn't mean you can't designate some kind of church or ceremonial area where such funeral services, wakes, weddings, maybe even formal induction of champions to legendary status can be held (once attaining champion status gets sufficiently difficult, so you're not spammed with champion ceremonies for every wrestler). And then the visiting of graves can be a separate and more private affair.

What? I mean a party in a party room... not the Graveyard.

How is this any more of a problem than the twisty turny dining rooms and statue gardens some people make?

If there is only one tile free next to the coffin you'd likely see lots of dwarves on that one tile which looks a little odd. I imagine this working best in tombs really.

A possible addition that would bypass the problem of all your dwarves piling into one tile like that would be to have a large room designated for services after which a dwarf takes the coffin to its resting place, this would require coffins to work like bins and be moveable, even without the addition of funerals I would like coffins to work like this.

Yes, I kinda misunderstood, but ultimately I'm agreeing with you.

What's with the strangely confrontational tone with everyone today? (bah maybe I just had a long day) I'm only thinking aloud here... I imagine the actual grave site to be a more solemn place, where individual dwarves go to pay their respects privately, while the going away party would be held at the designated party place(s) elsewhere.

Confrontation brings better formed ideas out as each side picks at what the other says and then the other side is forced to clarify or modify the idea.

In the end it creates a much deeper point of reference for the idea.
