Do pumps carry fish?
« on: March 27, 2009, 05:18:51 pm »

If I run water from an underground river through some screw-pumps so it's closer to my fortress, will there still be fish in it?

Yes, though not because the pump is pushing them through.  Fish are classified as "vermin" - they teleport randomly instead of actually moving to save CPU cycles.

The presence of fish depends solely on the distance to the river/pool. If you're transporting the water a long distance, the only thing you'll be able to fish out of it is turtles (which you can fish anywhere).

Fish presence is only determined by biome. That savanna wilderness above you has a preset amount of fish in it, and the brook has its own preset amount of fish in it, and the cave river has its own preset amount of fish, and the mountain doesn't have any fish in it, and fishers pull fish out of whatever population they're currently standing in when they fish.

I have a fort in the middle of a dessert, no ponds, only other biome is the mountain biome, and after pumping water into an above ground reservoir from the underground river, turtles started showing up.

You can fish turtles out of your pond even if it's a single tile dug out of an aquifer, in a glacier. Turtles are everywhere.

I also seem to be finding Toads everywhere; including the aforementioned desert.

Well, toads actually do live in the desert. So THAT makes sense, at least.

Turtles living in a glacier.. that's a little more far-fetched.

For vermin fish (the one you actually eat), will appear regardless of where the pond is.  If you're talking about creature (like carps), then no, pump will not pump them up.

It's a mutated turtle.

One of the toads decided to go for a swim in the moat - presumably because he could path through the moat to my dwarves. He is not charging in, just loitering in the moat.

The toad is having a nice relaxing swim.
The goblin mounted on his back, however, is drowning.

Y'know, there are species of ice worms that live in glaciers. I want them as vermin.

Maybe even...megabeasts.

Can creatures melt? Because apparently ice worms melt at 5°C.

They can in the next version, I think.
