[40d10] No job
« on: March 27, 2009, 09:39:36 am »

Okay.  So in multiple forts, my dwarves have decided to stop working.  Not all of them, necessarily.  The only one with that problem is a fresh fort with only seven dwarves.

Anyway, for some reason, certain dwarves will not do any work.  In one file, it is only restricted to the jobs requiring their highest skill.  Legendary miners not mining, for example, but doing other things.  In the fresh fort, it's just a solid denial to do any work, including hauling.

There is a clear path to the place where the jobs need to be done, but they just stand around, occasionally moving somewhere else.

I've tried drafting them and undrafting them.  No go.  They just sit there, with "no job" in yellow on the general screen.

Edit: I noticed that the last message before the miners stopped working in the newer fort was "so&so cancels carve ramp: interupted by fire imp."  So I think this is related to the bug where dwarves injured by captured hostiles continuously cancel rest.

Are they willing to do work in another part of the map, further from the fire imp?

Nope.  Actually, some of them will work.  It's just those that canceled from the fire imps that won't work.

Tried bum-rushing the imp?  Although I guess if he's hanging out in the magma pipe, and your miners won't do their thing, that could be difficult.

Well, I've killed my carpenter, oh, about 4 times now trying to kill them all (savescumming).  Each one has died at least once.  The miners still aren't working, and neither is my planter.  They won't even eat or drink.

Edit:  Nevermind about the fresh fort.  It turns out I had accidently designated some important stairs to be removed.  :P

There is still that problem with the other fort, in which some workers will not perform jobs related to their highest skill.

Like mining and woodcutting, perhaps?  Are they wielding the weapon required?  Is it forbidden?  That can happen if they get into a fight, which is a bug.

Yep, they have their job weapons.  I've only noticed the bug occur in a miner and a bone carver so far; there may be others that I just haven't noticed from lack of importance.

This may or may not be related to the issue I saw and mentioned in another thread.

I noticed my broker will not mine either (he's a miner).  He will haul stuff however, just not mine.  If with trading at least you can cajole him into it with repeatedly toggling "anyone can trade/only broker can trade" I haven't figured out how to make him mine.

I'm using 40d build.

I've noticed that work priority always go from the top-left...  That could be it?

Especially when you mark tons of stone for dumping and they have refuse hauling on?

Maybe... I havn't tested it.

An update on what I reported:

It may have been something else I did that stopped the broker from mining.  I only had two picks and somehow they both ended up forbidden.  I guess when I asked him to quit mining so he'd go trade he dropped his pick and then couldn't grab it again.

Also, after I loaded from a save I cannot reproduce the "won't trade, No Job" issue either.  He doesn't go into the "No Job" state anymore when there's a need for a trader at the depot.

I'm seeing this issue as well, and I've got an obstinate trader that's conveniently persisting through save/load, draft/undraft, and unrequest/rerequest trader.

Not the first dwarf I've seen sitting with No Job when there was a task waiting for them, either.  This entire fort seems prone to it.
