I couldn't plant Blade Weeds in a reclaimed fort, the option wasn't in the farm plot menus for the relevant seasons.  The fifth post in the link below lists what I did to get them to be recognized in-game.

I know there's a bug where sometimes you have to "see" the actual plant before you can select it for planting, but here I never saw the actual Blade Weed plant, just Hide Root, so I don't know if it comes under the same bug.

I'm pretty sure there's nothing about having to "see" the plant.  It's just that outdoors plants are picky about what biome they grow in.  Things you can harvest in your own biome, you can plant there--but if you somehow trade for a swampy type of plant seed, and try to plant it in the desert, it just might not be available for planting because it can't grow there.  You can even have differing biomes on the same map.

Well, I don't know what the problem was, but I couldn't plant them in a reclaim when I had planted them in the original fort, and the farms were in almost identical locations.  So I figure -> some sort of bug.

It might be an issue where either:

a) the blade weed seeds are forbidden

or

b) you haven't imported/harvested any blade weed, so the game thinks that you can't plant the seeds for some unknown reason.

Is this proven to actually happen?  If it is, cool, known bug then.  If not, well, I haven't ever heard of it so I'd like to quell superstition if it's not known to happen.

To be able to grow a plant, you must meet one of the following:

-Be in the biome the plant grows in

-buy the plant and process it is some way.

I assume I am experiencing the same bug, as i cannot grow quarry bushes even though I have the seeds (rock nuts), they are not forbidden and I have an underground farm that can grow all other underground crops.

I am playing a mod so I did not have the option of taking underground crops on embark, and bought them from a caravan.

You have to buy some quarry bush leaves from the caravan and mill them as well; buying the seeds is not enough.

I would assume it's because the seeds are of a plant the farmers are not familiar with; once you have had the plant they grow into and have procured seeds from it, they have a better idea of what the seeds are for and how to care for the plants.

I'll try that; however, I was able to grow sweet pods from seeds bought from the same caravan, even though I only bought the seeds and not the actual plant.

But, you can't buy blade weeds (or any of the underground plants other than plump helmets) from a caravan (or at least, I've never seen them in the caravan lists), so you can't process them.  And, I've never had this problem before when I couldn't gather plants from my area, I could always plant the seeds I got off of caravans.  But this time, it wouldn't let me.

Nope, didn't have seeds left from before the abandon.  Does the information that I had the seeds carry through to the reclaim?  But then why couldn't I plant them when I got them off the elves?
