bug or feature? diorite -> red sand
« on: March 27, 2009, 06:48:19 am »

i know this has been reported before, but i think i have a partial way of testing for the bug.

my current fortress, i flooded an area with water from an underground pool, and built a plot on it.   the muddy area was larger by the plot and this not taken up space.

so, muddy diorite + time = shrub growing on the spot
+ time = shrub dies
+ time = shrub is removed by game = change of tile to red sand!!

so i now have a single tile of red sand at the bottom most floor of my fortress beside my farming plot...   and i have magma on this map

now, i saved here, and did some testing..   yes, you can gather sand from it, but if you build anything over it and remove it, it returns to the proper diorite.

side note:    do not tell your dwarves to smooth stone over an area where theres a plot...    completely removes the ability to plant anything.

It's definitely a bug.  There are several bug reports that relate to plants altering tiles in weird ways.  Yours is probably a form of one of them.

# 000657 □ [dwarf mode][jobs][designations]    (Report 1,Report 2) harvesting vegetation can make sand turn into stone, and cutting down trees can turn stone into sand
# 000993 □ [vegetation] (Report) tower caps can create soils like red sand underground when they grow up in the mud and are removed
