Nordic Tileset by Techhead.
« on: March 26, 2009, 09:11:28 pm »

I've made a tileset over the past year, I don't feel like talking much right now, so here is a link to it on the DFWiki.

In-game screenshots would be better, imo. Too many angles for my poor eyes, but people might like it.

Now note this is late at night and I'm tired, but...
Those angles stab my eyes. Unless they make some really cool-looking fortresses and aren't totally unreadable in text, they stab my eyes. Literally.

Looks... dwarven.

I'll have to test it out at some point.

I can see what I can do about softening the angles, short of an entire redesign.
Is it the letters or the icons or both? Are some tiles particularly egregious?

I actually wasn't entirely happy with my handling of the letters myself. I might redo the lowercases for legibility.

If anyone has problems or suggestions with specific characters, please don't hesitate to mention it, so I can fix them quicker. I think I'll wait a day or two until I get some feedback from play-testers.

I'd like an in-game screenshot, actually. It'd show the contrast between angles and the general blockiness of the game better.

I don't know if I'd say the tileset looks bad, because I don't think it necessarily does, but the letter resembling runes would make the entire game nigh-unreadable. That's bad.

I mean, I could read it. Just not comfortably.

Hmmm, I decided to upload an image of my fort rendered in nordic, just for an example, but it didn't work... I downloaded the .png from the wiki and converted it to 24bit bmp in paint, I added it to my init, it works just fine with my old font, but this is what happens when I try nordic http://mkv25.net/dfma/map-5204-searseal. The weird thing is that there are these dwarf figures for my dwarves, but there isn't a single image in my art folder that looks anything like them.

Would someone else please upload an image of nordic in use for people to see?

Did you adjust the grid to 16x16?

Edit: Nah, the PNG on the wiki is borked.

Doublepost boo, but still.

Myeah. Same on both downloads - the PNG on the wiki is problematic.

Edit'D:

Used photoshop to change the format, worked a bit, but still no go.

The angles do gouge my eyes out, btw.

Yeah, that one right below the rightward-facing arrow needs to be blank.
Other than that, lessee... I'd say give it all some kind of shading to reinforce the shape.
The Stone is easy to confuse with a Diamond- try making the Stone a hexagon.
The Lever states are nice, they look like they could be abstract letters or the characters they are.
