[40d] recursive legendary item
« on: March 26, 2009, 08:22:00 pm »

I'm not sure if this is a bug or a traditional geek joke (http://catb.org/jargon/html/R/recursion.html):

Otungamud uz Ibruk, Shockthundered the Growls of Ash, a turtle shell idol

This is a turtle shell idol. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is decorated with hoary marmot leather.
On the item is an image of Shockthundered the Growls of Ash the turtle shell idol in turtle shell.

Like, whoa, man. That last plump helmet is messing with me.

It probably was unintended, but at the same time not implausible, there's some famous works of art that get into these recursive loops :)

It is perfectly reasonable that they want to celebrate their work. Just don't look too closely at the image or you may go insane, something about alien geometries and an infinitely small idol...

It happens surprisingly often in this game. What I find more annoying is engravings of masterful engravings of other masterful engravings. BAH.

Yeah, this bug has been widely attested for a long time, but strangely I can't find any entry for it in the bug list.

personally I think it's awesome and shouldn't even count as a bug.

Of course you can't.  It's not a bug.  As stated, that sort of thing is done in the real world - as early as the Renaissance, I believe.

And this is how tinned food was invented.
Alternately: The Brick Testament. It's a really fun look at what the bible would look like if interpreted literally. With Legos.
Just so I remember

You may be right.  To me, the fact that it happens so often, and that the artifact descriptions don't handle recursion in a graceful or natural way, suggests that it's unintended behavior, but I'm not positive.

Merely being unintended doesn't make it a bug.
