The Ultimate Iron Bolt
« on: March 26, 2009, 06:25:59 pm »

Well, I had just gotten out of a goblin siege and I was reactivating my workshops that did things with wood, since I had ordered my dwarves to stay inside and I haven't got around to Tower-Cap farming yet.  So I looked in one of my craftsdwarf's workshops, and lo and behold, there was a decorated Iron Bolt at the top of the list of contained items.  I decided to examine it, as I had recently killed a hydra and my bone carver had used its bones, and I wanted to know where they went.  The value of the Iron Bolt is 6990 dwarfbucks.  The iron bolt is of normal quality, so I exclaimed for a bit...and when I looked closer, I found this work of art.

This is a Iron bolt.  It is decorated with exceptionally worked turtle bone, exceptionally worked kobold bone, masterfully worked char bone by Deduk Kolzat, exceptionally worked salmon bone, exceptionally worked goblin bone, exceptionally worked dog bone and exceptionally worked raccoon bone and encircled with bands of exceptionally worked perch bone.  This object menaces with spikes of masterfully worked turtle shell by Deduk Kolzat, superior quality steelhead trout bone, exceptionally worked muskox bone, masterfully worked hydra bone by Deduk Kolzat and exceptionally worked cat bone.

On the item is an exceptionally designed image of a Steel war hammer in clown loach bone by Deduk Kolzat.
On the item is an exceptionally designed image of a Steel war hammer in shad bone by Deduk Kolzat.
On the item is an exceptionally designed image of a purring maggot in elf bone by Deduk Kolzat.
On the item is an exceptionally designed image of a oriole in human bone by Deduk Kolzat.

So, I counted the bone types in the object, and it comes to 17 (including turtle shell).  I think it's kind of awesome, since I have a couple of artifacts that this is more valuable than, and it's a single normal quality bolt.....Or is it?  Dun dun dunnnnn....

Note: I'd poste a picture, but I don't know how...

Update One: The bolt was modified again, now worth 7110 dwarfbucks with 18 bone types.  I'll post another full list when it gets really big.

Anyway, I figure that the dwarves are only marginally less wasteful of metal than they are of wood. The moody dwarf's selecting only the best 5% of each bar of metal, and eats the rest to sustain him as he works on the artifact.

Now bolts just need to be indestructible and retain history of everything they have killed.  Whole legends could be written about mythical crossbolts.  Far more interesting than swords.  What would be even better is if it was a dragon bone bolt.

OK, so now the idea of an item becoming an artifact sounds incredible.  You could use Legends to generate fantasy novel plots.

How is it that the dwarves choose what to decorate?  Seems like value, proximity, and personal preference could play into it.

I think my bone carver just decorated stuff from the top of the workshop's contained item list down to the bottom until he ran out of stuff in the workshop (or didn't have any at all), and then grabbed something else.  Then whenever he got a new type of bone he would decorate stuff from the top again.  Since the iron bolt was at the top of the list (e.g. the first thing he decorated) that's how it got like this, I guess.

I may be wrong, but I believe Toady has hinted that this is in the works somewhere down the road. Dunno about ammo per se, but I think weapons and possibly armor that have been used to kill megabeasts and/or lots and lots of normal critters will somehow earn their own names and legends, sort of like how normal animals can one they've killed enough named entities.

I've done my best, and though it doesn't do the true work justice, I can certainly envision not wanting to be shot by this bolt.

Not enough magma. Also, sorry to quote myself, but i talked about something like this in another thread:
they also dont seem to realise that that +Pig tail sock+ isnt worth their puny little lives either.

Possibly dorfs auto-forbid items if a few have died while retreiving it? that could actually work.....

Love, jakkarra

Maybe enough dwarves die trying to get the sock it gets written into the legends?

Great, now im having visions of a giant, blighted, ashen crater in the ground, the ground covered with bones, weapons and armor, and in the middle of it all, a single, -pig tail sock-......
, except i was talking about certain areas of the world becoming known as horrible spots of death, with unimaginable riches at the center, that would get written into the legends.

here's a gypsum grate that was sitting at my craftdwarf's workshop for years. whenever any new bones became available it was the first to get decorations. it costs 3550 dwarfbucks now.

my resolution is huge so here's a terribly ocr'd version for monitor-impaired (i tried my best to get a reasonable window size for df but the tiles would come out all wrong)

interesting facts: the craftdwarf made a picture of himself producing an artifact and a picture of a dwarf in dwarf bone.

Dwarves like everything to be encircled with bands and menaced with spikes. Even the chairs.

Ouch.

I think one of the reasons why my bolt is worth so much is because it's got masterfully worked hydra bone too.  But wow, that is one hell of a gypsum grate.  Anyway, I'll update the thread as the bolt gets bigger.   ;D

When we try to apply logic to artifacts we always get confused.

I had a slight WTF? moment when I saw this part of the description:

On the iten is an exceptionally designed image of Asnel Craftbold the Trite Stroke of Corridors the
dwarf and a werewolf in turtle bone by Ingiz Etolbonreki Asnel Craftbold the Trite Stroke of
Corridors is enbracing the werewolf.

However, I guess that's not actually as bad as:

Engraved on the floor is a well-designed image of a kobold and a carp.  The kobold is making a plaintive gesture.  The carp is laughing.
