Improving the site finder?
« on: March 26, 2009, 04:17:29 pm »

How hard would it be to improve it?  I find the site finder doesn't have a few of the options I'd really want.  Also, even though it always does a full search of the world, it doesn't list multiple site hits.  Here are the improvements I'd see making the site finder more friendly for newbies looking for good sites

Trees : Toggle for tree/forest type.  One of the things you most often search for that the current options don't give you (yes, you can ask for high rainfall, but you can get swamps or mountains Wwith that)

Minimum # of biomes: Often people want sites with high biodiversity.

Water source: Set to Yes to require Underground river OR underground pool OR river.  Set to No to disallow all the above.

Magma Source: Set to Yes to require either a pool or pipe.  No disallows both.

Toggle through found sites.  - TAB or something on the finder menu toggles through all found valid sites (perhaps only one site valid per region area though)  Can cap at 100 found sites.

I realize that DF vets will look askance at me considering the finder makes it already much easier to find what you want, but I think that, as the DF community grows, DF should get a bit more casual friendly.  Plus you can always just not use it.

I'd have a problem with that.

For example, my map culling specifically requires a magma pipe (not pool), and underground river (not pool or normal river).

And if you want an OR type deal, you can always just turn river/pool/underground river all on.  The search result will be partial, but it'll tell you which specific criteria that matched.

I'm pretty sure he meant adding the option to search for '___ source', not replacing the individual pipe/pool/etc options with it.

and yeah, i'd think most people who use the site finder, myself included, would appreciate being able to search for -all- relevant site features (sand, trees, biomes, flatness/cliffiness, etc) and for the love of god we need a 'find next' and a 'stop searching after you find this' option.

Yes, I just meant I'd like the options added, not having any taken away.

And yeah, adding a Sand option would be good too.

My suggestion:  Allow the site finder to search for creatures.  Maybe not specific ones if that's too hard, but it would be nice to be able to specify that you want lots of undead or dangerous aggressive animals (or, conversely, zero dangerous aggressive animals.)

I thought of this while reading the "lacks challenge" thread; a lot of people said they have trouble finding an area with nasty creatures in it.  I don't know if the site finder could easily be changed to help with that, but it would be great if it could.

Hi and welcome to the forums.  If you search the Suggestions forum for "site finder", you'll find that there are many threads in which these ideas were discussed.

It might interest you that Toady, DF's developer, is also aware of the potential improvements:

site finder issues

There are a bunch of threads in suggestions that I've been collecting, so when I get to this again, I should have a much nicer site finder.  Won't be this time, though I might have to mess with a bit when I tear up the underground, and for the release after this it'll depend on time.

Resurrected due to desire for tree finder. It's one of the basics, even more basic than flux stone and the finder won't find it!

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.

More than anything, the finder should be able to find Sedementary layers and streams.

All I ask for is a fortress with a sedimentary layer, Magma, and a stream.

Might I suggest Ultrafinder? It can search for sedimentary layers.
