Dwarf children SHOULD stop following their mothers after a certain time (at least it tends to appear so for me).

Also, infant dwarves (eg. newborn babies) make excellent combat armor.

 Perhaps when somebody is manning a siege weapon, the firing arc automatically receives a value telling dwarves not to enter it. They won't cancel jobs over it, but they will try not to path through it nor path into it. Sure that may be an artifact sock made of adamantine with spikes of adamantine, but there are a dozen siege operators looking over the field where it stands.

 Of course, you would have some crazies that would not mind at all.

Fixed? Have you never seen children before? This is exactly what they do IRL.

When employing siege weapons, I always paint their field of fire RESTRICTED, anyway. Unfortunately, this does mean that stupid animals will prefer to use my Corridors of Doom to get around, so tightly-shut or forbidden doors must be employed to keep them out... unless you feel like target practice/thinning the herd.

I think females shouldn't be in the military anyways.. or only in rare occasions where their personalities would be suitable for it.

My standard operating procedure for useless migrants:

if(male)
    military;
else
    hauler;

The woman get a quick practice with crossbows up to competent so that the militia is ready in case the military falls, but other than that, no women in the military.

You could try restricting the area in front of the ballista, if they decide to go there then nothing will stop them, but they may not decide to go there if they think that it is too far away...
