Would this Work (Flaming Bolts)??
« on: March 26, 2009, 07:59:07 am »

Ever since the development of the everburning lignite bin trick, I've been thinking about applications of the trick, when I suddenly thought...

Would a bastilla bolt shot through one of these bins get set aflame as well? Would the bin be destroyed? I'd like some advice on the subject before I start on it.

My idea was:

Code: [Select]
{X{<<<
{X{<<<
{X{<<<

Where X are the flaming bins, { are fortification walls, and < is the bastillae.

i don't think flying objects are affected by temperature and such, but it would be cool if I was wrong. You can't even [v]iew flying creatures so I doubt it though.

They are items though, not creatures. You'd use k to view them in flight no?

you could test by putting rum barels in front the line of fire ... if the blows up it should work ...

No, I think Birdo is right. Flying objects don't have the same physical properties as inert ones in DF, so I suspect that the bolt will probably not really 'exist' in the same space as the barrel, preventing it from catching fire. At least that's how the physics engine of DF will probably handle it.

If anything, it makes for a cool barrier - something other than the usual moat.

Maybe flying object interact only with living beings ... in this case you need to target a goblin/kitten and you need an other alredy burning goblin/kitten in front of the arrows flying path ...

If it doesn't work, it should. Things like this will end up on Toady's millennium-long to do list.
Awesome indeed.

It will be a while, but I'm working on getting this set up. I'll post the results once I see them.

I wonder if a lavafall might work for this as well, have it flowing down in front the the ballista, and fire the bolts through it.

It'd most likely just set the ballista on fire, maybe it would get the bolt too, assuming it doesn't burn down first, but in the end you lost whatever the bolt was made of, the balista parts, your balista workers, so I'd put this down in a "loss" category. Unless you took out a whole hfs with this, then you can put this down in the "win" column! As long as half of the parts of the demons are on fire of course...
