Clumbsy Dwarves?
« on: March 26, 2009, 02:34:40 am »

This may sound like a silly question but. Can Dwarves Trip and Fall downs tairs?

Im currently mining out some shafts for daming a river and my Expedition leader is a Miner. The liason from the dwarfhomes appears to have followed the miner down the shaft and died.

I first noticed when his head was seen on one level and his body 2 levels below, I have no idea what killed him.

Also Will they assign a new Liason later?

No, you only get one. They can fall down stairs but only if something bad happens, normally this isn't the case. He might have died of old age.

From what it says on the wiki, this may no longer be the case...?

Only if
A) They are flung accross by a forceful blow
B) They get punted by a collapse.

Will your dwarves fall down stairs. And even then, A is sketchy.

Liaisons come from worldgen, so it's certainly possible for them to die of old age. Happened in my fort just the other day.

Toady, how much of DF is inspired by Labyrinth? Is Armok actually David Bowie? Because that would simultaneously be disturbing and awesome.

Don't unconscious Dwarves fall down stairs also? Maybe he was injured and he passed out.

The strange thing is the Liason was pretty dismembered. His head was I think 4 Z levels from the bottom of the shaft, then a level with nothing, then his left arm followed by the bottom level which had his body in about 6 different parts. There was no sign of a collapse so it was a mystery how he died. Tripping and falling down the stairs was the first thing i thought of is all.

I hope his death doesnt cause any problems as this was only the first year of my fort and this was my  second attempt to dam a river.

He exploded and the first explanation you come up with is him falling down stairs?

Did you do channeling work?

I read somewhere on here that if you place hatches on stairs they will stop dwarves tumbling to their doom.

Don't worry about it. The dwarves should assign a new one after about half a season.

No they don't, as has already been established.  You're thinking of the Mayor.

Testing this revealed that unconscious dwarves do not fall down up/down. I set a meeting area on a 5x5 area of up/down stairs over a 10 z-level drop with no beds available. They fell asleep and neither they nor the animals fell down.

Maybe sleeping is somehow different from being knocked unconscious, I'll test that next.

I love this. Dwarf CSI must be a hilarious show.

"So, what've we got?"

"Travelling diplomat, appears to have plummeted multiple floors, different body parts spread across a 60 foot area. Sixty feet... vertically."

"Ouch. Nasty. Torn to pieces and hurled down a shaft. Haha. Shafted.  So, agent urist, what's our current theory?"

"We're thinking he either tripped, or died of old age."
