A request for an object
« on: March 26, 2009, 02:12:49 am »

I'm not really a modder, but I'm in need of a specific object that doesn't occur in the vanilla game.  A book, to be precise.  Now the book doesn't actually have to do anything, it just has to sit around and look pretty.  I'm also not particular on what it can be made of (though golden tomes sound really cool in my mind).

I'm planning on including a library in my next fortress, hence the need for books.  So I'm wondering if someone would be so kind as to make a book for my use.

Should work, remember to add it in the entity file to so your civ can make them.

add to item_toy

could add things like runic, engraved, cursed and scrolls to have other civs bring you something interesting to put in your library

Make books out of cloth [SOFT] or leather [LEATHER], and you can decorate them with images.

Then a dwarf can get a fell mood and make a book out of human dwarf skin, and fill it with texts and pictures of demons and undead.

yes.

Also, we can make children's books out of elf hide and fill them with pictures of fire, elves being stabbed, and dwarves cheering.

brainwashing is fun!

Hmmm, interesting.  Is there any way I could make a separate book type, like the toy type?  Or is that hardcoded?  I'd rather not make a bunch of toys in the hope that a few books pop up here and there.

Its hardcoded. Although you could make a smelter reaction that made books when you fed in leather/cloth.

this is actually a brilliant idea...   possibly there could be a container (shelf) that can only hold books?

If we ask toady REAAAAAAAAAALY nicely, and donate enough, he may find it in his heart to make you said books as an actual item.  (dont count on it though)

Necro-post but I was thinking about books.

A clothing item could be made called book or tome.  That would allow it to be made of leather or cloth and be detailed with stories.

But is there a good way to mod in a clothing item that won't be worn?

Certain clothing items are never put on (caps and gloves?) so you could add them if they are made as a smelter reaction but if you want them made at a leather or clothing shop with quality modifiers they'd still show up on immigrants.

What if you set the armor level to like 4 or something above what the game uses.  Will it default to clothing level or not let anyone use it?  I usually mod out clothing so I'm not too familiar with it.

Well, you could define a material "paper" that would be made out of special plants. Those papers might be made into art and then could be bound together with leather, wood or stone into books.
