Umbrellas? How pansy do you think these dwarves are? I just don't see an experienced hunter with his trusted dogs, stalking a zombie deer through the undergrowth, suddenly stop and go "oh shit its starting to drizzle, I better get this intricate contraption open to shield myself from the dreaded RAIN!" Same with say a hauler sprinting outside through the battle to retrieve the fresh corpse of his lifelong comrade, when it suddenly begins to rain. You think he's going to be concerned about a getting his beard a bit damp? I'm willing to grant that picky nobles who commission an umbrella for their personal use would make more sense.

ed: I forgot to mention I think some way to group the armor into sets is a great idea.

Actually, considering dwarves spend most of their time underground, they would probably be quite annoyed by rain - even a drizzle.  They wouldn't be used to it.

Oh sure, you wouldn't expect dwarves to do it, but then, you wouldn't expect a 1400 AD Englishman to use one either.  Not because they just sucked it up, but because they didn't have umbrellas.  But since they don't have umbrellas in the time frame of a movie, they don't have them in said movie, and people just get this irrational mental image of knight + umbrella = pansy.

Somehow that post seems to ignore the prior posts, as it does not even touch the matter of any of the other races in DF using umbrellas.

1) It isn't immediately implimentable:
2) It isn't for Dwarves:
3) It isn't like how the game is currently:
1: No Dur, it is new business, and it may go to the back of the Dev List for this build.

2: Have you seen what an umbrella can do? It can be used as an improvised spear, and can be used to block bolts, catch weapons, and yes, I've watched many movies where they improvised with umbrellas.

3: ...

And for the underground bunkers, protection from debris, and magma mist, and a way to herd animals.

The umbrella + knight thing, how about has a spike on the end, and it turns out to be really resilient, or it is a scabbard, oh, HOW ABOUT A UNREALISTIC PARADIGM?

Hello parachutes, spears, bolt blockers, weapon catchers, and staves, or scabbards, and improvised saw blade, maybe a crutch, maybe a bolt/something holder, or it is rigged ( Bonzai! Find the umbrella that isn't functional, and the person with the least amount of facial bruising, win! ) !

I don't know, a simple [RAINBLOCK] tag for certain clothing items might be simple enough.

Dwarf is hit by light drizzle.

Is using umbrella? Yes.

Unaffected by drizzle.

'The Avengers' comes to mind. The original series--in black and white, thank you, not the movie I didn't bother watching.

Umbrellas and other weather-specific items and clothing are entirely appropriate for SOME creatures and civs in DF, even if they don't match up with your idea of straight-out-of-Tolkien dwarves who for some reason have Aztec macuahuitls and ancient Greek black bronze.

I don't know...to be honest I don't agree with you, or with Neon at all. I don't want to see kobolds or humans running around with an umbrella. I don't know why, but it looks extremely silly to me in a game like this. Either way, I don't mind having anything like this in DF, if I will be able to remove it from the game via modding...[..and yes I know that it would be possible.  ;)]

Humans.  Humans.  Gee, y'know, I have an umbrella.  And y'know what else?  I'm a human.  Funny how that works, eh?

I just said the only reason they didn't use umbrellas in 1400s (the time frame we're roughly going by) is because no one thought to put the mechanisms available to them together in a way that produced an umbrella.  They didn't need a long chain of other discoveries and inventions to make a simple one, it's just that no one thought to do it.

Ding! There ya go.
Now, where else on the internet would Umbrellas start a more severe flamewar than religion?

[PRECIPBLOCK:0] No effect on weather, default.
[PRECIPBLOCK:1] Moves all levels of annoyance down one step; lowest level (likes outdoors, drizzle) is negated.
[PRECIPBLOCK:10]Moves all levels of annoyance down 10 steps...may have downsides like penalties in nice weather; i.e. "Urist felt overdressed recently." or simply have some limit on the weight of clothing a dwarf or adventurer can comfortably wear.

This could work. Then we add a new kind of item, "accouterments" or something, such as pocket watches, dentures, cape clasps, and, of course, umbrellas, that can be worn or carried like clothes and used by adventurers, don't "layer", and can use tags like [PRECIPBLOCK:X].

OH! And don't forget [SUNBLOCK:X] to keep those dwarves with sensitive skin or Porphyritic Hemophilia happy!

Kobolds? Well that is just silly, they would have had to have stollen it. Kobolds represent Neolithic societies so to speak mixed in with their own spin.

Yes but they did have then in Europe in the 1400s. Though they are unpopular.

Because no one in Europe made them.  They normally came from Asia, as someone previously noted.

Anyway, umbrellas can be pretty badass if used properly.  One decorated with spikes should count as a military weapon.

That happened a bit later then the 1400s. It was used for Self Defense mind you. You basically put a spike at the end, unfurled your Umbrella.... Stab!

Hmm apperantly there is little difference between a Parasol and an Umbrella. This would also suggest that the "Mechanical" open and closing would not be required for the definition.

This is hillarious, Umbrella means shade and Parasol means a shield against the sun. Going by this the original use for Umbrellas and Parasols were to shield you from the sun.

Well, maybe, but with the way dwarves put spikes on everything, I can see that happening in DF  :P

Anyhow..... Skipping the umbrella part of this...

I really think requesting a suit of steel plate armor would be cool.
I dislike setting up six seperate runs to make 10 suits... It would be handy to just have the dwarf grab 17 bars of steel or whatever and create a solid suit of plate steel armor.

Even if it just created the individual pieces it would be ok.    * could technically be done with a smelter reaction but I would prefer if it was actually in a real live blacksmiths shop reaction.

Probably because it is hard for you to picture something bright and ornate usually depicted either in modern or renaissance when high fantasy RARELY if ever shows actual culture that isn't dirt farming.

Though that probably still isn't it as I am sure your not against Wigs on the same basis. So I have no idea why it is so bothersom.

Still think it's hardly something a medieval man (or dwarf or especially--goblin), grimy, unwashed and long adapted to the smell of his own sweat and feces, would do. Just imagine it for half a bloody second. Oh Urist, are you headed out to haul some of those 80 kilo rocks? Don't forget your trusty dog leather umbrella-you'll catch your death!
Sure, getting caught in the rain results in one bad thought, but it's not as if the dwarf will then go break stuff and kill babies. He deals with the very minor displeasure and moves on to his booze. Besides, what the hell do you guys think hooded cloaks were for? Wiping your ass?
