Well, my brother never uses an umbrella, whereas I will use one if it gets mildly heavy.  Then there are people who use them for drizzle.

somehow umbrellas just don't seem 'right' for dwarves, regardless of the technological concerns. i'd imagine a dwarf in a heavy hooded cloak (perhaps oilcloth or similar) if it was really coming down out there.

right now clothing in general needs to be sorted out and made more controllable/useful, but a 'heavy cloak' that was actually used in conjuction with rain/snow/cold weather would be a nice inclusion

as for armor sets, I completely agree. I'd also like to see armor sets divided/sorted better along the lines of leather/chain/plate. right now i still have to refer to the wiki to figure out 'okay this peice of metal armor counts as plate, but this one is chain' etc for different materials and locations

I don't see Dwarves using Umbrellas simply because of the way they live. Umbrellas just arn't good things to have around when you often live in tight enclosed areas almost perpetually underground.

Though it needs to be said that though this is "Dwarf Fortress" they arn't the only race in the game and Humans MORE than can be offered Umbrellas.

"One interesting aspect I always found interesting is that Umbrella's were used for Snow which is unlike now. It makes sense to me though since we have Waterproof wintergear and these would be people who would walk outside with just several layers."

This struck me funny in two ways.

1: I've seen, and probably at some point used, umbrellas for snow before. It's just not very iconic, but it happens. Especially if your elderly grandmother has just gotten back from the beauty shop, when the snow starts.  ;D

2: I walked 2 miles in the freezing rain and snow last night, for fun, and gardened for another few hours in the middle of a hailstorm last week. I wore my leather jacket last night, which is really unusual for me, to wear a second layer.

I'm a cold freak. I'll wander out to get the mail in my bare feet, when there's a foot of snow on the ground. I even like swimming and showering (sometimes) in cold water.

A foot is good, it is colder to walk in short compacted snow than deep snow (which can sometimes feel warm).

As for your #1 I NEVER EVER see it. Heck I never even see people no matter how cold or how danty they are... use anything other then Jeans or Dresspants to protect them from the cold. Ohh you Crazy Canada! (I doubt it is a Canada thing though)

As for #2 I do that too (the snow part) though it is mostly because I had to spend a year with a hole in my Boot without knowing it... So Snow would pile up in my boot making it freezing cold until it became painful. This was when I was a child though... so I don't have as much resistance as I did back then (In which the cold snow was just a mild discomfort and I could spend a day in nothing but socks in the snow) unlike now where it gets to me in about 2 minutes.

Also by Second layer I ASSUME the first layer was your clothing.

That hardly seems like a good reason to dismiss umbrellas.  Where do you live, anyway?  Sounds like some place where they hardly even get snow.  In fact, it sound like where I live; Low country South Carolina.

I didn't dismiss umbrellas... I said it isn't for dwarves but perfect for humans on the basis on the structure of the Dwarven world. I think your reading too far in.

As for where I live... There is tons of Snow and temperatures that can reach -30c

I don't remember the part where I dismiss umbrellas... I even proven they existed pre-1400s in Europe.

Oh, sorry.  I meant their use for snow.

I thought I had typed that.  Weird.  Oh well, probably my ADHD.

Oh, sorry.  I meant their use for snow.

Well it is just odd where I live because I hardly ever (or rather never) see it no matter how much it is snowing. (I live in Canada near Toronto)

This doesn't make any sense. Everything was "easily possible" at any period.

You have redefined "easily" into nothingness. My point is, someone could have made a usable umbrella by hand at any time - it's not above the tech level in the sense that they didn't have the machines to make the machines to make the machines to make the machines, or in the sense that it requires scientific discoveries that had not been made by 1400.

Yeah, I absolutely agree, which is why I've said, that I find this idea "silly"...it's simply not fitting into DF's fantasy gameworld/theme at all.  :)

I'd like to quote Neonivek's excellent analysis and debunking of common replies in Suggestions threads, with particular emphasis on #2:

It is just one of the things you have to get used to on the suggestion forum. One of the three largest unreasonable shoot downs.

They are as follows in no particular order.
1) It isn't immediately implimentable: You will get this a lot. People will shot ideas down based on the idea that the game as it is currently could not support the idea.
-Example Phrase: Ranged weapons are broken so we shouldn't add Longbows.
2) It isn't for Dwarves: Despite having 5 races you will often see people shoot down ideas because they don't apply to Dwarves.
-Example Phrase: Juice isn't very Dwarf-like, why would they drink someone that isn't alcoholic?
3) It isn't like how the game is currently: Similar to the first one but it represents theme rather then mechanics. Basically taking the game as it is currently as a end result.
-Example Phrase: Elves don't need homes, they sleep on the dirt.

Note: Examples to ACTUAL complaints are coincidental.

You will get people who will refuse ideas as they go against how the game currently plays often ignoring long term goals or even the Devs themselves making it particularly frustrating. Though you also get the exact same thing on the suggestion side as well.

It is all part of the Dwarf Fortress experience.

Umbrellas and other weather-specific items and clothing are entirely appropriate for SOME creatures and civs in DF, even if they don't match up with your idea of straight-out-of-Tolkien dwarves who for some reason have Aztec macuahuitls and ancient Greek black bronze.

I think the real question with umbrellas is, would a dwarf really need it?  I mean they have an entire magma filled mountain covering their heads for about 99.5% of their lives.  Would they really even bother with something like an umbrella for the .5% of time their above ground, only about 10% of that time is raining?

I do like the idea of oilcloth cloaks though.  Perhaps some new plant that could be processed via alchemy and applied at a clothiers workshop to make cloaks (and perhaps other clothing) waterproof to reduce/negate the unhappy though from being caught in the rain.

Of course all that said, even in modern days with all our fancy umbrellas and rain coats and stuff, most people (not all) still don't like being out in the rain.

You could write an actual reply instead of doing some cheap copypasta that you think sounds nice.

He wasn't saying the idea was bad for non-dwarves. Other people were saying that the idea applies to dwarves well, and he was saying it doesn't. That's it. :/
