Embarked on a... friendly goblin fort? WTF?
« on: March 26, 2009, 01:34:44 am »

I thought I'd embark on top of a goblin fortress for "fun."

But when I got there...

The party embarked on top of the tower, which would have been a very quick loss indeed if it weren't for the fact that the gobbos were friendly towards my dorfs. Seriously, listed on the unit screen and everything.

(Also, a bunch of elves were living there too. More reason to hate them, eh?)

How anticlimactic.

And then what?  Mine the sky? . . .  Actually, that'd be awesome.

Unfortunately any "towns" or whatever that you embark on will automatically be friendly to your dwarves, even if the rest of their civilization is at war with you.  There's nothing you can do about this except possibly play a much older version of DF.  I don't know exactly when it changed, but it wasn't always like this.

Seal the tower, flood it. Water or magma, your choice!

"Yeah. My plan was to drop some kittens into the siege, and have my dwarves freefall into battle, landing on top of the kittens. The plan was kinda dumb though because the kittens were standing on grates, and the goblins killed them with arrows just as I was releasing the freefalling dwarves. So the dwarves weren't able to land on kittens and just fell and died."

Now see, if it were me, I'd harness the horse I'd been gifted, and ride it out to conquer the whole damn goblin empire. Gobbos make good soldiers, and better fodder, and the ones that survive, you can set up as puppet leadership, while your dwarfs pull the strings behind the scenes.

At worst, you've got the makings of a gobbo civil war, which can only help the Mountainhome.

when you get an goblin ambush the current goblins in the fort will become hostile and the goblins may even kill each other. this happened to me with orcs. the orcs killed all my dwarfs and i reclaimed to see that the siege force was friendly now.

some time later i got sieged again and the orcs got hostile, but they did also kill each other before going towards my fort. i dont know why but its seems like the orcs fought to who would get to conquer the fort.

Do map residents still go about their business in the town, or do they just wander aimlessly? If they still go to sleep it may be possible to turn the town into a zoo through extensive use of cage traps.

I didn't stay long enough to see. There were no workshops, furniture, etc. in the fortress that I saw- just the constructed towers with some engravings, and a mined-out corridor below ground.
