I wonder if dwarves can smell burning grass while sleeping?
« on: March 25, 2009, 01:07:38 pm »

So, I've recently started a fortress in an experimental small world on a portable drive. Nothing special, but I did want magma so found a decent site (a few trees, shrubs; nothing too exciting but some promise of iron) with a pipe... and a bottomless pit, but it's on the other side of the magma pipe which I intend to permit a wide berth (at surface level, at least).
It's 12th of Slate, 51, and things seem to be going adequately for the founders of Grandfloors. They've so far lost a stray cat to the predations of a local fire imp, which isn't all that bad. The carpenter/hunter is luckily quick enough on her toes to be able to catch up with the wild mountain goats to hit them with her axe; work is proceeding at a fair rate on the Grand Hall; the farmers are finding edible berries growing all about; even the expedition leader/mechanic/architect/administrator is spending her time wisely, learning the fundaments of masonry.

These dwarves were just settling down to their first nap, when...

...and it suddenly occurs to me why I've never before seen an active magma pipe enclosed by verdant meadows. Because grass is inflammable, and BECAUSE FIRE IMPS POP OUT AND START BURNING SHIT.

Is there anything I can do? This silly dwarf looks like toast at least, sleeping outside... unless the rock-built workshop will protect her from the blaze.

Thinking fast, the dwarves (fortunately roused from their slumber by... something) enact a plan to halt the fire's progress by digging a channel 'twixt it and the mouth of the fort.

Unfortunately, it appears that insufficient work will be done in time. Furthermore, a second blaze (started by the fireball that struck the stray cat... I've no idea what caused the other fire) threatens from the south, and all existing grass, trees and shrubs on this level face incineration... not to mention the dwarves themselves and any goods not yet taken into the fortress.

The most irritating thing about trying to halt this fire by channeling, I suppose, is how stubborn and superstitious dwarves can be about digging:

"Dig' frae east, stone goes tae weeeest! (err, waste)
Dig' frae west, al-weeys best."

unfortunately, theres almost certainly going to be a dwarfish casualty.

I believe that smoke will also kill dorfs, and if not, i think the fire may still pwn her.

if she awakes before the blaze is over her she has a slim chance of survival, but shes almost certainly going to perish.

dont worry though, the others can pick up the slack untill the immigrant wave comes around.

She woke up, but decided to continue churning out rock blocks. Now she's on fire!

For a second, it looked like she was going to be safe, as long as she stayed inside the workshop until the wave of fire passed over. Unfortunately, the fire was only slowed down; not stopped.

[edit: is there a way to get this flaming (pun not intended) moron to remove her burning hood and cap before further damage occurs?]

Thats one of the things to be fixed in DF. Currently dwarves do not notice if they are on fire.

they also dont seem to realise that that +Pig tail sock+ isnt worth their puny little lives either.

Possibly dorfs auto-forbid items if a few have died while retreiving it? that could actually work.....

Maybe enough dwarves die trying to get the sock it gets written into the legends?

Great, now im having visions of a giant, blighted, ashen crater in the ground, the ground covered with bones, weapons and armor, and in the middle of it all, a single, -pig tail sock-......

I've been careful to forbid anything with a fire risk, but it doesn't matter as the other stupid dwarves have been casting themselves into the inferno raging outside (or in some cases, just taking a kip out there). Possibly in tribute to the now ex-expedition leader.

The fire has nearly consumed the entire level, now. I might try savescumming, else try to reclaim.

Maybe enough dwarves die trying to get the sock it gets written into the legends...

Make stockpile-firebreaks next time. Grass doesn't burn under stockpiles.

Yes it does. I tried doing this in brush fires I intentionally caused. The fire paid no heed to my thin stockpile border nor my thick stockpile border after I realized it was burning through it.

An interesting thing about brush fires is that dwarves will run through it without getting caught themselves. Probably the best way to avoid dwarven casualties is mindless hauling of inflammable things into already burnt areas until the fire passes. Just don't haul the burning booze!

My adventurers frequently cavort among the flames while they attempt to punish humans who merge with goblin civs. Not sure how do deal with fires (and these fires are huge, on my last save—perhaps originally two or three tiles catching fire in isolated spots on the map, each rapidly spreading to eight more, then sixteen more, then twenty-four more, etc.) in Fortress Mode.

I'd abandon/reclaim right away, but dislike having miscellaneous dwarf spongers hanging around the fort. Nice as a sort of early warning system/speed bump to invaders, but they normally just interfere with hunting or clog the announcements list.

[edit: Savescummed. Miners completed work on the moat just in time to prevent the hallowed embark site being reduced to cinders. Shame about the rest of the world...]
