Jail Time vs. Beatings
« on: March 24, 2009, 10:22:04 pm »

Hey guys,

Question: I used to try to keep up with mandates, but it cost me a legendary weaponsmith recently, so no more Capt. of Guards.

Anyway, my dwarfs were only getting sentenced to beatings, and my legendary wrestlers always gave out fatal beatings. I can't figure out why my jail was going unused.

The wiki says that as long as chains are available and set to justice, violations should result in jail time. I have all that. Copper chains, totally set to J for justice. Any idea what's going wrong?

I think it depends on the offended party.... nobles like to issue beatings and hammerings, even when they don't dwarves can spend 100+ days chained to the floor. MAKE SURE to give them royal prisons less they go bezerk.

well, metal cages instead of ropes and chains should at least prevent hammerings. beatings cannot really be avoided, but you can assign somebody pathetically weak to administer them (unassign any guards and replace the captain of the guard with some peasant), you can also draft the unlucky dorf and give him some armour.

By far the best option is to remove the problem at the source. Next time the nobles go into their rooms, just lock the door and leave them there. No more nobles means no more mandates. No more mandates means you can't fail them. No failed mandates means no more beatings.

until the next year, that is.

also, killing 4 nobles that way (count, his consort, tax collector and the hammerer) finally made my fortress known as a cursed death-trap, so no more immigrants for me!

Ah, that goes away.  In my Urist Salvedangers story in the community games board the fortress of Blockedlance has been considered a death trap several times in its history.  Within the last two years Ive killed like 70-80 dwarves (on purpose), and yet I just got three migrant waves this year.  Go figure.

Imprisonments are always fatal for me because nobody ever feeds them or gives them water (regardless of the fact that water and food are always within 20 tiles of the prisoner and he is in the most populated part of the fortress). If you do the suggestions above, beatings will be a far better option to prison.

I've noticed in my current fort that nobles only seem to hand out mandates, when something ticked them off. Usually it was my dumb ass mayor who forgot that he was assigned a wonderful royal bedroom, and slept in his old diggs(which was smoothed and included armor stand and weapon rack)...

Anyway after I unassign their old rooms no more mandates :D

Porpoisepower, I'm sure you really meant to say "Anyway, after I assigned all nobles to bedrooms adjoined to the wild predator training pit, no more mandates"...?

maybe, but that wasn't the case for me. i only had an occasional baby meatshield killed during a siege, but no more than 2 dwarves per year, and it still was considered a death trap for 5 years straight. then i got bored because i basically postponed losing indefinitely.

i should mention the map was evil, maybe that contributed to its infamy.

Don't have any guards or any sherrif. You will then never have any beatings. Ever.

Note that you can still have royal guards as they are not involved in the dwarven injustice system, its the regular guards that do that stuff.

If you have no guards or sherrif you can ignore mandates all you want. Nobles will become unhappy, non-noble dwarves will become happy due to not being beaten, and the hammerer will just stay idle the entire time.

I use dwarf manager to adjust the skillset of the hammerer and turn him into an elite chef.  ;D

Sounds dangerous. What happens if he prepares enough roasts and gets to Legendary Meattenderiserdwarf?

I just kill them and assign the hammer to the military.

My mayor is nice and only demands the odd chunk of lead or animal traps. He's useful, too, being a legendary bone carver. Leveled up the hard way.
He's currently outfitting the fortress guard with helmets and gauntlets, and decorating anything within reach with bones.
