Do-it-yourself fossils

My most recent fortress is at a site with both a magma shaft and an aquifer.  I decided I wanted to use the obsidian around the magma shaft as a shortcut past the aquifer, but didn't want to deal with those pesky fire imps harassing my fortress.  So I dug down to the aquifer near the shaft, and started pumping water across the top of the magma to form an obsidian cap, sealing the magma off until I was ready to open it back up.

One of the fire imps decided to come up and see what the commotion was at exactly the wrong time, and attempted to pass through some magma as it was in the process of solidifying.  The result: there is now a space the contents of which are as follows: warm damp rough-hewn obsidian wall, 3 fire imp bones, and fire imp skull.

The fire imp got fossilized. ;D

You can make insidious traps that use this very principle. Imagine carving out masterwork obsidian statues from the victims of these traps, and then setting them up outside your fortress as a warning to future invaders.

You can also cryogenically freeze creatures if they are in magma proof cages.

thats a thing bird, if this did work properly (ie, cages stayed where they were frozen) then this could be perfect for adventurer forts.

im going to freeze a dorf named Urist Mcsolo. and place him in a room with a slugman and a selection of elven maidens restrained to walls, all of this above a pit containing a bronze collosus.

yeah, thats good........

Autodeath, I would assume.  I've never seen anything survive it, regardless of modding.  Being in a cage might make it survivable, though.
