Well, that was anticlimactic.

Anyone ever thought about the "1 item challange" for adventuer mode?

All you get is one weapon of your choice. Not cloths. No nothing but that one thing, it can be your armor that you have to use to bash your enemy in the head, or a shield or well a arrow.

I had a rather disappointing episode with a Titan, the first megabeast that fort encountered. The troops rushed to the battlements, the civilians were pulled back, the catapults were manned, the whole fort was on alert. Time passes... ... ... *Goes looking for Titan* Titan was missing a foot and fell unconscious every few steps... A siege turns up when it is half-way to my fortress and it gets killed by goblins...

Dragon shows up, it is missing a rear claw... Falls unconscious in my main corridor and has it's heart punctured by a catapult...

I am beginning to think that someone went around cutting the feet off of all my megabeasts...

Megabeasts are pathetic, especially during worldgen. I can rarely generate a world where megabeasts survive past year 30 or so, so I have to bump their size up to 500 just to make sure they'll show up at my fortress.

It was a lucky shot.  ;)
Yeah it's kinda weird when 1 bolt kills a dragon, or when 1 unskilled spearsdwarf kills a dragon alone. Combat should be more realistic in the next version, thanks to the layers + some combat/damage related changes. Anyways, these unrealistic moments will disappear after the combat arc gets implemented, I am pretty sure about that.  ;)

They won't disappear entirely.  The Achilles heel should, on rare occasions, get hit by the first arrow.

My first megabeast was similarly anticlimactic. After my first goblin siege I set up a three row deep line of weapon traps in front of my entrance. Each trap was armed with three steel spears, because, it being my first fort, I rather unwisely wasted my steel to try grinding my weaponsmith's skill, and thus had a TON of steel spears lying around. Anyway, I get the message that there's a dragon coming, I quickly lock all my dwarves in inside, and try to station my, at the time non functioning, marksdwarves...and before I know it, it's over. The dragon went down to a single weapon trap.

My current megabeast is terribly terrible. Of course, this is a bit different from the rest of you. Basically, I decided to reclaim an old fortress. Lo and behold, a titan has moved in over the years! And utterly wiped the floor with my reclaimers. So I start with two squads of crossbowdwarves now. They are horribly killed. Then I start with two squads of speardwarves...

After the fifth reclaim parties demise, I decided that I should not go back there. Now I am trying to train an adventurer to take him down.

So yes, megabeasts can be badass. However, the game needs to check if the megabeast could siege your fortress before sending you one.

I had a non-legendary wrestledwarf kill steal both a dragon AND a titan from a legendary duo of marksdwarves and a trio of legendary axedwarves... and they both came to the fort intact.

*sigh* gotta pump some size and damblock, it seems.

I set up the same way for my first dragon a few versions ago. It got about a third of the way to my fortress from the northwest when a siege showed up - about 50 gobbos from the southwest. They met up right outside the entrance to the fortress and the dragon set the lot of the gobbos on fire. It was spectacular. Hardly any survived, and it took a full season before all the fires died down to clean up the mess.

Haven't seen anything remotely like that since the worldgen changes.

I do recall in a famous book about thirteen dwarves and a hobbit one famous dragon getting killed with one arrow. I thought it was a bit cheap, too.

When I set out with a party of me (swordsman), hammerman, spearman, spear elf and sword elf the first enemy we encountered was a Hydra. It was a pretty tough fight for my clawfodder companions. It ripped through the wooden armour of one elf and the guts flew out. One head bit off the other elf's arm and a claw ripped off his leg. By that time I already managed to get a few blows in, slashing out an eye or two. Before it finally gave in to pain after I cut its throat, it managed to decapitate my spearman companion. Then me and the hammerman, still both untouched, started bashing the grounded Hydra till I had it bleed to death by twisting my sword in one of its skulls.

Since these were just my starting skills, that Hydra was pretty pathetic. The elf survived by the way. ;D
