Hobbies?
« on: March 23, 2009, 02:42:55 am »

I noticed we don't have a thread for this... that I know of.

It's pretty simple. Do you guys have any hobbies besides the computer?

I like to cook. I really enjoy cooking. From preparation to washing to chopping and frying and baking and yadda yadda yadda. It helps that I also like to eat. Can't decide what I like more... eating or cooking...

In any case, I consider myself a pretty accomplished cook. I can make all manner of food, from cakes to homemade pasta to some pretty elaborate soups and so on and so forth. Salmon kebabs wrapped in bacon and leek? No problem. Pork fried rice wrapped in an omelette? No problem. Grilled stuffed chicken? Piece of cake.

Yeah. I like cooking. Slightly less than money. I put a lot of love into it. The only problem is that I follow my gut feeling so much that it's really hard to replicate previous successes... What about you guys? Any hobbies?

P.s: All that stuff they say about how girls will automatically sleep with guys who can cook? Yeah, it's totally false. It's a conspiracy controlled by women to manipulate men into learning how to cook so they don't have to!  >:(

Changing the subject lines, is that a hobby?

Well, most of my hobbies have a topic devoted to them by now.  I'm an extremely amateur photographer (and I'm going to be bumping the photography topic later today).  I do a lot of reading.  I'm also into extremely amateur MMA (the yard-tard leagues, mind you, none of those organizations where participants are expected to know what they're doing), I do a lot of physical fitness activities such as you see in the Life and Times of Strife topic, and, like you, I cook.  But my cooking focus is more on meat than anything else.  I'm Competent at a barbeque and at least Skilled at using a Dutch oven.  Some of my best dishes include Latvian-seasoned beer can chicken, and Manatee chili.  Hey, maybe the Life Advice section could use a cooking topic where we share our best recipies.

I'm slowly learning Photoshop, but that's on hold right now thanks to DF.  I also plan to take a stab at writing a DF story, but that's probably going to wait until a later release of DF.

I have far too many interests and hobbies to share them all.

In short:
When indoors, I enjoy writing, creating pixel art, cooking, reading about new topics, and discussion.
When outdoors, I enjoy swimming and diving, geocaching, hiking, and skiing when weather permits.

Too many here too.

My main hobby lately is gardening, and I'll be doing a lot of that until around the middle of September.
I use some different historical/archaeological methods of growing, from South America, and try to apply them to Utah's climate, so it's pretty interesting.
I cook too, and grow whatever vegetables I'm interested in cooking with, so the two kind of go together.

If you guys want, I can do little cooking tutorials with pictures. Should help those going to college or moving out on your own. Maybe some stir-fry or cooking basics like "how to fry an egg"? Hehehe...

To be honest, 3 years ago, I didn't even know how to cut an onion.

Um.

Eh.

Erm.

Hm.

Oh!

Writing. Or more to be specific, typing. I like making stories, deleting most of them, reworking them from the ground up, deleting alot, but not as much as before, doing it again, cutting down certain parts, insulting myself for others, DOING IT AGAIN, adding in flare and anything else I might have missed, and then finally...saying it sucks and let it gather dust.

I think its a learning experience.

Includes: Military Science Fiction, Alternate History of many forms, Satirical Fiction, Comedic Fiction, and a spattering of Fantasy when the mood strikes me.

I don't think I have anything from the last few years on any of my houses computers. And I haven't gotten any inspiration for a while.

Wasn't someone working on a writing collaboration of some sort? Kind of like Strife's thing, where everyone posts their progress and what their doing, and how their doing it.

That'd be cool.

I'm a bit of an inrovert, so my hobbies are honestly not that inresting...

Mostly just reading books and watching whatever is intresting on TV or Youtube.

As sorta conflicting with me being otherwise extremley introverted I love exploring dangerous or abandoned places, I still need to give the old hospital a visit.

I like this thread!

Hmmm... lessee now...

Reading is definitely way up there, especially good sci-fi/fantasy, though I also read a fair bit of programming reference books just for fun (weird, I know.)

Programming, mainly Java, when I've got time.

Tiny bit of 3D modelling type stuff, with Blender.

I also like to find and play interesting board games, chess and go are the classics, but I also like a newer one called Khet, as well as an old one called Outdoor Survival.  I'm saving up to buy the Saganami Island Tactical Simulator, but that'll be a while.

Also, computer games!
