Soldiers and bedrooms
« on: March 23, 2009, 01:56:04 am »

Do soldiers ever need their own rooms?  I was looking at my housing situation and noticed that I never freed up the rooms that originally belonged to what are now my 5 soldiers.  I have them trained well and all 5 are legendary.  I also have 6 guards and 10 recruits that will soon be finished with the screw pump gym.  Do any of them need rooms, or do I just need one huge barracks?

As far as I know soldiers won't even sleep in rooms, they all stay in the barracks. Even champions don't seem to mind sleeping in a bunk room full of smelly recruits every night and have no preference for having pretty things in their room. They get their joy from sparring and killing things.

I have seen my champions a few times in one of the assigned bedrooms.  The times I noticed this were because I saw someone taking water to them.  Upon examination I found them to be hurt.  I guess I didn't know if that meant that they were dragged there as a random hospital type room or if these rooms were still used by them.

you can set the sleeping status in the squad (m>v I think) screen -- the options are sleep in barracks and sleep in owned room I think.

If you don't have any undesignated beds, soldiers will get put in their own room (or the barracks) when they're recovered

Perhaps an unclaimed room could be used as a hospital? I always make at least 3 undesignated beds for injured dwarves with a bucket just in case they manage to maim each other.

HERESY! That is rewarding their incompetence... Dwarves must recover from injuries on their own!

Thus is Armok's will!

You see, booze is a parasite. It lives off dwarves and compels them to dig into the ground so as to create massive defences to protect it's self. It really shouldn't be called dwarf fortress, Booze fortress would make much more sense.

I recall seeing something in the military menus that modified where the soldiers slept and you could set it so they slept in bedrooms.

Yep. From the military screen, to the squad settings. You can set them to sleep on the floor, too. At your stations, men, for the next two years!

I have my military dwarves set to sleep in their rooms full-time, and they do indeed to so.  I also like to make nice-ish rooms (fully smoothed, * or + quality furniture, ~250☼ rent range) to assign to the champions, which in turn frees up the filthy hovels low-rent areas for the poorer dwarves.

Soldiers get happy thoughts from sleeping in their own room, so I use the M-V menu to set them to sleep there.

The beds in the barracks I tend to use for treatment of the wounded, since the major source of injuries is sparring, currently.
It just edges out goblins, which itself is about double 'nobles locked in bedrooms'.

A tendon in the skull has been torn!
The Raven has been knocked unconcious!

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.
