Impending full-fortress mass evictions...
« on: March 23, 2009, 12:24:48 am »

Ok, so this is my third or fourth (and best yet) fortress...I have 78 dwarves, about 8-10 with legendary stuff, and total fortress value over 1,000,000.  Massive defensive system, over 4000 food stores, all that jazz.  But before I knew about the dwarven economy and evictions, I had my miners engrave my entire residential district.  Basically, every bedroom is at Grand level.  And once I get two more dwarves (in about 2 seasons), the dwarven economy will activate and every one of my dwarves will get evicted...I've invested a lot into this fortress, and I'm in its 4th year now, so I'd really like not to have to start over.  I know I can use the Zero Rent:Yes tag in the init.txt, but I was hoping there was something I could do to save my dwarves that isn't semi cheating.

Thanks,

Anyway, I figure that the dwarves are only marginally less wasteful of metal than they are of wood. The moody dwarf's selecting only the best 5% of each bar of metal, and eats the rest to sustain him as he works on the artifact.

There are ways to unengrave floors but not walls. Just put floodgates on every tile.

Digging out the engraved walls and replacing them with constructions is an ugly but passable solution.

Thanks, but I don't currently have enough miners or picks to do that in two seasons...although I could make some =)

No time for anything but dwarven sacrifices. If you have the time, dig a 6 or so z-level pit, put some 4/7 water in it, and add some dangerous animals or captured goblins. Make sacrifices stand on a retractable bridge and dump them. Kill all of your immigrant nobles first.

Actually, that stuff isn't all that necessary. Just find a way to kill off a bunch of unnecessary nobles. You might be able to stave it off long enough to make a new residential district.

Hmm...right now the only nobles I have are a Dungeon Master and my Mayor (who is a legendary miner, engraver, and record keeper with uber stats).  But I could just set all of my dwarves to mine a new area and use the Grand rooms for nobles' dining, residence and offices.  Thanks for the idea =)

isn't this kind of situation what zero rent is there for? It's not cheating, it's just a fall-back option in case something goes horribly wrong (like this).

That said, just dig out a barracks and load everyone else in there.

If ya got the wood make a few large bunkrooms and crank up the cheese in the meantime.. screw pump gyms, 48x48 block mining projects, you should be able to get all those worthless immigrants legendary in something in a few years.

Put multiple beds in each room, make each of them a room designation, the overlaps should make it easy to drive the status of the room right down to meager.

Just turn off the economy. It blows and adds nothing fun to the game.

Don't worry about dwarves being homeles for a while
it gives only a minor unhappy thought, a fine dining room will fix that..

Take all the time you need to dig some cheaper housing for your dwarves

Cheesy Method 1
Edit the init file so dwarfs stop breeding and no migrants show up.
[POPULATION_CAP:0]
[BABY_CHILD_CAP:0:0]

Cheesy Method 2
Make a 1 or 2 tile room somewhere and put a table in it, make it the only meeting area. The dwarfs should become legendary talkers within a year if they have ample break time.

Cheesy Method 3
Turn off the dwarven economy in the init file.

You could simply use q►T to stop rent on certain rooms.
And basing your diet on quarry leaves, sweet pods and dwarven wheat is a great way to create jobs, so long as you have a ton of bags to spare.

I think that kicks the owner out.

If you want the economy on, but you don't want your dwarves to pay any rent, go into the init file and change ZERO_RENT from NO to YES.

Assuming you don't want to mod the game (and yes, turning rent and/or the economy off is modding), you can dig out some slums somewhere.  Just find some unmined area and carve out a bunch of 3x1 rooms.  An unsmoothed 3x1 with no-quality bed, chest, and cabinet has rent of just 44☼.

You could simply use q►T to stop rent on certain rooms.

It does.  The only way a non-noble, non-legendary dwarf gets his own room is if he pays for it.
