I had to look on every z-level to spot them, but they're there alright.  Like the goo that the crewmen find in the movie Alien right before all hell breaks loose.

I think Dwarf Heaven comes with only one - don't count on me being right, tho'.

But I do remember that at least one of either the chasm or pit open onto the surface, so no "digging" is required if it's there.

You'll become acquainted soon enough...  ;)

If you embark with both chasm and pit, you'll have at least 2 (I've caught two on two different gens of this location). One is on the surface, the other is down in the pit. You can't miss it, really. Someone with more chasm had more according to one of the tools that shows everyone on the map, even still hidden - probably down in one of those little caves that people tend to not explore.

I'll probably do what's easiest, namely try to kill them if I encounter them. I don't really see myself bothering with farming the GCS this time around, especially since there's still so much for me to be learned in this game, not to mention that I won't have too much time for DF in the next couple of days either.

Thanks for telling me where to look all the same.

Your best bet with the surface one is to give it a very wide berth - don't go near the tip of the chasm and turn off any reason for anyone to go there - until it is revealed by a cat, passing elf, etc. Then you can toss a few marksdwarves at it. For the one in the pit you have the advantage of having a ledge on the level above. Just toss a few kittens down onto the level with the webs and it'll reveal itself quickly enough. That's also an easy way to catch it - dig a 1-wide hallway into the chamber with the GCS but before you breach it, install a cage trap right at the end. Then breach it and have everyone retreat. If you didn't walk right into it then you can toss some kittens down there and the GCS will chase them. The kittens will try and path up to meeting zone and the GCS will follow right into the trap. Might take a few attempts, but it's safe and reliable. You can chasm the cage if you don't want to bother with it.

So if I wasn't gonna keep the second GCS, then why bother capturing it? Wouldn't it be easier to deploy a ranged squad near its habitat?

The issue is whether you know where it is or not. If you do, marksdwarves work pretty well (keeping in mind that poorly skilled marksdwarves probably won't stop it before it can get them within web range) but if you don't know where it is, the GCS will be taking chunks out of at least one of them before anyone even sees it.

I see. I thought attacking would instantly break its cover, hence my confusion.

It does, that's the problem.

One of your dwarfs announces "I've found it! It's gnawing on my giblets!", and there it is. Maybe it'll have time to grab a second dwarf for dessert before you take it down.

If it's early in the fort, it could easily mow through all 7. It's happened quite a few times on this map, in fact.

One way to get the outside one is to set cage traps at your entrance and (if it's been revealed) entice it with a tasty recruit.  Have the recruit retreat back inside and it'll get stuck in the cage.  It worked for me, and I think my recruit was a no-stat peasant before.  I had no choice, it was hovering just outside my fort, eating the rhesus monkeys.

Out of curiosity, on this map where is there flux?  I haven't come across any and the caravan doesn't seem to supply it (or I can't find it on the requests menu).

where do I put the info under the spoiler tag in the first post.

I tried entering it under the Design New World with Parameters, but didn't work.

You copy that stuff in the spoiler and paste it into your world_gen.txt file under data\init. At least that's what I did and the site I genned looked roughly like the one in the OP. Just keep in mind that apparently it's supposed to gen a bit differently if you do it under 40d11.

I second this question. A mate of mine even used reveal.exe and he didn't find any.
