I just found out about this amazing game a little while ago and I'm hooked. I easily spend hours playing, and this site is where my dwarves make their home (over the bodies of countless goblins).
For those of you wondering about the lake, I do have one 2 square little lake... thing that I think may be it. However it's pretty easy to siphon the river under your fortress and set up some wells.
I found quite a bit of copper ore but it's spread all over the map so if you haven't killed the (multiple for me!) GCS' and hordes of ratmen/naked mole rats/and other nasties that show up then it may be hard to get your hands on. Also it's quite horrible when all your dwarves are busy transporting that ore halfway across the world and goblins ambush. Bye bye to whoever is there.
I have found a little bit of iron around the bottomless pit on a couple levels. But yeah, gotta get most of it from goblins and orcs.
Someone complained about the lack of goblins... what game are you playing?! I have the orc mod and I only saw them once when I first began my fortress because there's so many damn goblins waiting in ambush that they can't come. Every time migrants come it's "despite the danger" even when I have squads sweeping trouble spots. But yeah, goblins need to appear on the civ screen. If they aren't there, then they aren't there.
Anyway, I've built my fort around the bottomless pit and magma pipe, quite useful. Has everything I need and I get loads of iron from the goblins plus it's safe (now, it wasn't before) to chop down as many trees as I need for ash... which I'm using (along with the great amounts of sand all over my workshop floors) to pump out clear glass blocks. Right now I'm working on a watchtower to make sure my fort is safe from orcs and quicken the killing of them.
On a side note I'm trying to devise a way to lure the groups into somewhere I can drop magma on them or some other horrible death. Does magma fall like water? I saw somewhere that someone had made a waterfall out of the bottomless put and I wanted to make a magma fall.
This fort is starting to get big (just got a dungeon master who, I think, trained a GCS I captured? Haven't gotten around to releasing it to find out) but really it's only an outpost towards the goal of building a solid glass tower partially in the bottomless pit overlooking the whole of the area. Can't wait!
One interesting thing about having a bottomless pit in the middle of your fort is that, when dwarves get melancholy, they tend to jump. A GCS a few levels down had good eating until I pumped it full of bolts.
Also is there any use for silk besides bags, images, and ropes? I guess that sounds like a lot but there are (regular) cave spiders all over this goddamn map and I think they're plotting to drown me in the stuff.
