Ah, Okay there we go. I was setting the area as restricted, but that was a lot of baby sitting.

That doesn't work really. The traffic areas just suggest the pathfinding algorithm what the best route is. If there is only one route to a tile, it will still go through a restricted traffic tile unfortunately. I hope that we someday will have a "forbidden" designation, so we can force dwarves to only mine that last caving tile from the proper direction.

You can actually do that in most circumstances. Have your mason build you a few statues and if you need to force a dig from a given direction, designate construction of the statue on all the tiles you don't want him to stand on. Suspend those constructions so nothing actually gets built, and the miner will respect that someone is going to come along and build there and not stand in any of the statue tiles. When the miner is done, just cancel the statue construction. Works great, even on constructed floors.

(That's a great trick for keeping your masons from walling themselves on the wrong side of a construction - but that's short term.  Pain to use on every new web you find, have those statues just sitting around indefinitely, tasked but gathering dust.)

So.. Been trying to regen this again and again to make a map with some iron in it. Any ideas how I can make it happen? Been reading about stratas and I'm not sure I get it. More specifically, I've heard people say they've got iron on this map.
Help me so Mt. Uristmore can be a reality.

See, on my gen I have nothing but igneous extrusive - it's all andesite/obsidian until I get down to gabbro, and I have yellow sand, not black. And a decent bit of iron exposed in the pit. So I have iron, but no flux.

You can change the composition of the stone on your map by either using or not using the all economic mod.

Most likely the differences that some folks are getting is due to this mod.

I haven't tested it but I suspect that if you change the order of the stones in the mod it might also change the stone.

I generated 2 maps from the same seed.  One with the mod and one without.  The differences were shocking.

I've found that depending on whether the seed is generated from Mac/Windows/Linux usually results in the same general features, but different soil layers.

So I've tried to replicate the saves with iron saves across different systems with vanilla DF. Does anyone else have an unmodded vanilla DF version of this that has iron / bauxite in it? I wouldn't complain so much if this map weren't teeming with a massive amount of things that can kill me.

Replaying this world since much fun was had last time before Nemesis errors.
A word of warning though: The mediafire linked region data isn't generated using your raws, so many changes you made to reactions, etc, might not work.

I can't see any other civs bar dwarf and kobolt and I have no access anywhere on the map to the trade depot- is this normal for this gen?

regen with different history, just change it to random in andvanced prefs.

Build it outside and see if that helps. You'll need to wait at least until your second year to get elves and humans, in my experience.

So I don't know was this a once off or what, but if you remove GIANT_WOLF_SPIDERS from the init (from the orc mod) you get Dwarf Heavan... except the mountain is terrifying/evil! 3 skeletal trolls, a skeletal goblin (in the bottomless pit), 5 skeletal fire imps and a huge number of other skeletal creatures!

Anyway, is it possible to breed skeletal creatures? I'm thinking of making a labyrinthine on the entire lowest z-plane, and population it with skeleton trolls and whoever's unfortunate enough to step into my entrance hall with removable floor :D

It seems very dwarven to use the hell itself as a garbage disposal. I can just see this isolated pile of goblin clothing, rotten food, and chunks of animals sitting there in a featureless plain, slowly cooking in the heat as demons pick at it.
