I'm trying to avoid locking in the fort after my military ended up dealing with an insane caravan and a siege. I could probably rig up a drowning chamber, though I think considering the size of my entrance it'd kill my FPS.
This is what I'm using at the moment; works fine until they come with crossbows, at which point half my military goes down in seconds. The plan generally is to get them to fall unconscious on the stonefall traps (first fort lost its military after my guys fell unconscious on the traps, Fun times).


@NeedsDF2GetThruWorkingDay: Never tried playing two fortresses simultaneously; remembering all the details/managing two large fortresses at once is probably beyond my abilities...

To protect from crossbows, I tend to have a 1 wide channel on the "outside" of every fortification - that way they can't be used against me.

it's piece of cake to generate such a map
i spent 2 hours this morning and 3 regions to get one exactly like this except it's 7x7 to get all the features

just boost volcanism to 21, minimum volcanoes to 160 (or 170 if you're brave), 4 side oceans, and turn off periodic erosion of cliffs to get a map with a lot of z levels

with a bit of luck you'll have a map like this in an hour or less on a decent computer

i have a link to my region on rapidshare if anyone wants to see it.. upper half of the embark area is calm mountains and lower half is sinister forest.. there is also some sand for glassmaking ^^

The whole point of this is slowly getting the size for features to be smaller. You're basically bragging about buying a candy bar for $1.20 when we buy it for $1.00.

Actually, he's bragging about buying it for 49 embark tiles, when I bought it for 16.

the size of it all is luck. i never play smaller than 6x6 anyway.. i like huge forts

Sorry if this was already noticed, but there's a Cave just a bit north of the 5x5 area that is highlighted in the first post. I made the area 7x7 hoping to get some of the sand on the right side of the volcano for easier access and not start right at the tip of the chasm... Turns out I still start at the end of the chasm and there's a cave full of Kobolds and an Alligator in the far north of the embark area.

THat really seems to be bad for my framerate, 7x7 normally goes easily at a 100fps in the beginning.. this one barely hits 80.

Hello,

So I've recreated this world using the seed given in the OP.

The only problem is that I am unable to construct magma smelters and the like.

Searching the forums has led me to the conclusion that perhaps something called 'reveal' was inadvertently used. The only problem is that I had not used this item, much less even heard of it.

Is this a common problem being experienced by you, dear player?

I tried using the enable magma utility, but to no avail. It was unable to locate the patch point, which indicates to me this may be something more...

I am playing in reclaim mode (trogdolytes weren't the biggest fans of my first expedition), so may this be yet another pesky reclaim mode bug?

Um.. when the GCS breeds does it produce biguns (moar GCS) or do they begin as littleuns (normal sized ones)?   I messed around with the GCS tag and started a new fort with the hopes of breeding them in captivity.  Now, besides the normal GCS, I see lil cave spiders making silk all over the place lol (moar then you'd normally see... like 4-5 in one spot)

I have searched everywhere on this map, is there any iron? All I can find is a small amount of copper and tons of tetra.

There is no sand ... the dorfen scientists will have to take their experimentation elsewhere.
I'm finding a cure for the cave adaption disease!

There's definitely sand unless you tinkered with the generating settings. You might have to gen it two to three times to get things done properly, but it should work.

I seem to have gotten one with a good decent amount of copper lying around (especially at the start)
