Aww. I put in the parameters and got a different world, it looks like (although there's still a nice site with river+magma+HFS+flux+chasm.) Possibly my mods are to blame- the mineral mod might affect how the world gens, I don't know.

I just DOWNLOADED it! no mucking about with seeds for me!

And now that I have it Ive already started construction of a rather nice site and Fortress ,Ive got my megaprogect worked out, a 35z level Ziggurat!

So far, after spending about 2 years on this site, I have lost ~10 dwarves to the GCS, who has a name btw, A trade caravan that was scared off due to a forest fire of epic porportions as soon as they arrived. A kobold snatcher that stole 2 children. A few goblin ambushes. Then I was safe for about a half of a year, untill a group of immigrants arrived when they were abushed by Troglodites, a few died, a few ran, and one decided to avoid death by Troglodite by jumping into the chasam at the exact same time I happened to be there watching, needless to say he is nothing more than a pile of dwarf at the bottom, apparently his dwarven parachute made of Marble failed on him. Now my fortress is in the beginning stages of a downward spiral, as everyone is now quite pissed off at the fact that about 10 or so dwarves have just died within a short period of time. This should be quite interesting.

Btw, awesome site, You are worthy of praise my good sir!

Edit: So far I have only found a little bit of Aluminum and Copper, not much to work with for metal smithing. :(

Regen and add orcs. You'll be swimming in iron. Oh, and a lot more people will die, so, uh, make them nicer bedrooms.

How do I forbid certain areas on the ground?

I just had a dwarf caravan come and kill the GCS, so I reverted to an older save and made sure the caravan didnt kill it.

My reward? The first migrant wave of 8 dwarfs takes a path directly to the spider and 6 are killed, and the other 2 crawl back without legs... how to I forbid them from taking that route; or forbid the area around the web?

you can always dig a channel there when the GCS are hunting wild life so they cant take that route.

 orcs arent that dangerous if you know how to defend youreself and then i dont mean like moats or traps. a maze where youre dwarves can shoot on the orcs while the struggle to find the right way.

Meh, so now I'll never get a TRULY tame GCS.

I was thinking though; what if I put it in a dungeon and separated it from a different dungeon by a channel filled with water, and put the nobles on the other end of the channel. Would it spit it's precious silk onto them for me to infinitely harvest? Here is a shitty diagram:

designations - set traffic area, set it to forbidden. note that it doesn't really forbid it, but they'll prefer any other realistic way. you can increase the cost of restricted areas in the init file.

I think the GCS needs a route to its target to spit on it, thou i dont know for sure but watch out so the web dont make a bridge over the channel so he can kill the poor irritating worthless nobles

Thanks, I completely overlooked the concept of the web creating a path over the channel!

Well, If I dump nobles goblin prisoners in there with it, then it will indeed spit up precious webbing all over them? Any way to get it to do this without causing death?

I think this would make the cave spider shoot the web and try to run around to get to the goblins if you keep an direct route there. and you wont lose any dwarf or goblin whatever you use. dont know if it works thou but i heard people done it before.

you dont have to make so much fortifacations but i realised it too late but i think youll get the hang of it

By the By.. Since so many of us are using this Map, I would like to Proclaim that will post screencaps of our fortresses to compare what others are doing on the same map.. I know i;ll be posting mine when I get home from work!

Interesting. I genned it with Civilization Forge and got MOSTLY the same site, except the magma pipe was a bit further west. I had to shift the grid to be 4X8 instead of 6X6 to get everything. I can see the magma and the chasm, but the bottomless pit is hidden, as are the underground river and pool, as usual.

Still, should be interesting. I embarked on a small hill-spike, (about five levels tall, tapering sharply) which I think I'll make the core of the fortress.
