Yea, changing the history seed should change where the civilizations start. IIRC you could also start a fort somewhere with flux, play until you get a normal king, then abandon. It was said in an older thread that it will remain as the new mountainhome for that civilization, so your next fort can import stones found there. I've never tried it before though so take it with a grain of salt.

Judging by a map i saw in DFMA, it might be in one of the south-western embark tiles, on the lower left hand side of the embark map.

Avoid the nasty area in the top-right by using traffic designations. Mark all the mean stuff as restricted and then designate a high traffic path between the wagon and where you want to start digging.

Works for immigrants, too. I played for years and never had a single GCS related dwarf death. It did get a few of my cats before I put the front door in, though.

Would this place be good for a newb? From what i've read, it's kind of harsh, with the GCS(s) and the chasm monsters and other stuff.

Yes and no.

DF is not hard, but it is a bit vast, and since there is no "win" condition, only many "fail" conditions, you're bound to make some sort of mistake sooner or later.

So, in one sense, this will show you many of the features - just don't expect to survive them.  If you build on the North or West sides of the map, you're far from the main trouble.

But you won't really appreciate it until you've mastered some of the more intermediate techniques and strategies.

Overall, I'd say save it for your second or third. When you want a bigger challenge.

*agrees with Albedo*

For your first fort, find a nice flat, quiet forest that isn't marked as 'haunted' or 'terrifying' so you only have to deal with figuring out the controls and which items are represented by which symbols.

The loo[k] key is your friend. So is the wiki. :)

Thanks, I actually haven't even downloaded the game yet. But i want to be ready for when i start. I have read a lot of stuff though, so i'm not completley in the dark.

Also i remember something about it being hard to start a fort on flat ground because of the lack of defence, or something like that.

I know you're new... I saw your first post. :p

Defense is just as easy on flat ground as it is on a 10 z-level cliff.
For a cliff, I dig straight in at the base for about 20-30 tiles or so, then perhaps a corner with some chained dogs behind it.
I could simulate the exact same defense by digging out a few ramps into the ground, then going horizontal.
I could also build an artificial cliff around my entrance if I felt like it.

Flat ground just means you're less likely to get entertained by some of the more FUN stuff.

Not if he's in a tropical map with a river (NOT a brook, those a perfectly safe), it doesn't. Carp and hippos are murder. And fire imps can be found on flat ground-that gets amusing.

Well yeah, but come on, he's not very likely to randomly end up with a river or a magma pipe.

By the way, make sure you don't go somewhere with an aquifer (blue squiggles in any of the soil layers) for your first several games, until you have a good plan for how you will get through it.

I love this site. I just lost a dwarf to a fire imp. All my dwarves were upset so I abandoned and then reclaimed the site. Because of the chasm and the GCS I came back with an army of dwarves. I had a pitched battle in the shell of my former fortress, then the GCS webed several of my guys and it was just a mess of dwarves, blood, and ichor. I only lost one of my soldiers with minimal injuries. It was awesome.

Withing 30 minutes my dwarf army diminished from 70 to 53 because of fire imps and the accompanying tantrum spiral

This place is great ;D! But I don’t have any horror stories like the rest of you, my wood haulers get attacked by the fauna but easily beat them down :'(. I think it’s because I am using the dark dwarf mod (and plenty of others) so I’m only getting attacked by the grown up babies. Here’s hoping I get some serious “fun” soon, it’s been awhile.

Edit: I may have spoken to soon of the two tribes of troglodytes that are not stuck in the chasm one just got hyper aggressive and launched a three pronged attack consisting of two trogs each. One on my wood cutter, no problem he has an axe and three pets. One on my Cook, no problem he’s insane and can take on anything. But the third attack was on one of my masons. He died and I got a named trog that my military is beating up. Weird three ratmen joined up on my Cook they all are in pain and have yellow wounds, what’s up with that? I think I will have my military kill the last to trogs on the surface.
