How are you guys approaching fortress entrance defense on this map? I can never seem to get my military built up enough by the time the second Orc siege arrives to cause Fun.

I take several cats and a fair bit of wood and seal myself in. Cats provide leather for shields and armor, and bones for crossbows and bolts. As in, all 7 get drafted and they pump them full of cat femur.

Bah, I had a fort going along rather well, then it got destroyed by a single berserk farmer, only got into the first summer.

I built into the pit, so I only had to defend the side of the pit facing the magma pipe. I started out by quickly mining some stone and walling up the pit with a wagon-width entrance, and then building a 3-wide path across the magma. I built a set of cage traps at the far side of the pit as a warning against ambushes and then built a room just inside the pit to put the trade depot in. With that setup, I got enough warning to pull everyone inside and could lock up the room to control the sieges. I added a row of weapons traps (obsidian swords) right at the entrance near the depot - catches the gobbos.

I tasked a single marksdwarf to be my permanent military to clear out the imps and hold off the ambushes and sieges. With a drawbridge over the magma, the cages, the weapons traps, and the ability to lock off the fort from the depot, and the depot from the outside, I can control things well enough for a handful of dwarves to defend the fort.

Unfortunately, none of my orcs have come with mounts, so they aren't all *that* hard to dispatch.

Hm. I like the fortress I'm at, and should keep working with it to learn from my (numerous) noob mistakes. I can't exactly run two instances of the game; 25 FPS is bad enough.

I do have a laptop that runs at about 18 FPS. Has anyone ever tried dual-boxing and managing two fortresses at once? Your head asplode? Y/N?

I'm trying to avoid locking in the fort after my military ended up dealing with an insane caravan and a siege. I could probably rig up a drowning chamber, though I think considering the size of my entrance it'd kill my FPS.
This is what I'm using at the moment; works fine until they come with crossbows, at which point half my military goes down in seconds. The plan generally is to get them to fall unconscious on the stonefall traps (first fort lost its military after my guys fell unconscious on the traps, Fun times).


@NeedsDF2GetThruWorkingDay: Never tried playing two fortresses simultaneously; remembering all the details/managing two large fortresses at once is probably beyond my abilities...

Any particular reason you want to take them on with your military instead of just letting them walk through a bunch of traps? Because traps are pretty darn efficient.

I currently have a small corridor leading into my first besides the main entrance (which has a drawbridge that gets pulled up the moment I spot nasty stuff) with 6 weapon traps, 3 stonefall traps and 10 cage traps. I had one seige sofar where the first weapon trap (10 obsidian swords) splattered 3 goblins. I'm currently in the process of building a big drowning chamber.

Originally the Orcs had the TRAPAVOID tag. Even without it they easily walk through stonefalls(all of the visible traps are stonefalls, first siege[~8 units] walks through with no casualties) and low quality weapon traps, and I kind of want it to remain challenging without going overboard on the traps or blocking pathing(IE take some damage every siege). The goblins are easy enough though, in normal unmodded forts I usually have only 2 military dwarves and they can handle everything, here I'm up to 20 champions with shields and crossbows (some armor) getting wiped out in ~10 seconds during the second siege.

The key thing I utilize is a long, straight corridor with a room on the side and a door. I set my army inside there and lock them in, once the orcs come close enough. Behind my depot I have about 6 or 7 catapults that I can fire into the orcs, and that gaurentees me a kill or two. Once the orcs are right by the door, I unlock it and order my militia outside. It makes any archers they brought ineffective, and this wa the bulk of my army attacks at once instead of running out one by one to be slaughtered.

I have. Dual core laptop means that two will run full speed if you aren't doing anything else. I did it when the fort I was working on with my son had a series of LONG projects to complete, construction, hauling, etc. Not much to pay attention to, so I got my first fortress with the org mod going.

You can very effectively manage ambushers by putting your depot in a kind of airlock. Put the depot in a room with a 3-wide access to the outside and a drawbridge to seal off the fort/depot. Then put doors between the fort and depot that you can lock. That way you can have the depot pathable while the fort is not, or have the depot not pathable either.

At the start of the season, lock the doors to the fort and lower the drawbridge so any traders can reach the depot. Gobbos won't path to it, because the fort isn't pathable, so they'll just hang out at the edge of the map. Once the traders arrive, lift the drawbridge and once it's up, unlock the doors to do the trading. Once they say they've left and you confirmed that they've picked up all of their stuff from the depot, lock the doors, lower the bridge and they'll leave immediately. Gobbos still won't path. You still might get a caravan wiped out if they get in visual range of the gobbos, but you cut down the odds quite a lot.

Doesn't do much to help with sieges other than make sure that when the caravan gets nuked, that it gets nuked on your depot rather than the other side of the map.

That last gobbo would stand there, missing an arm, punctured in a kidney, liver, and spleen, fading in and out of consciousness at the far end of where the drawbridge would go, and his last sight would be the drawbridge dropping down and smashing him like a bug.

God DAMN I love this game!

I've found sand in the soil levels just north of the pit/volcano and above portions of the aquifer; a couple sand locations are visible with no digging, just have to look at all the surface z-levels.

Will using reveal basically ruin all chances for HFS, getting the king and getting towercaps?
I think so... you can always just copy the save folder and use reveal on one copy to preserve the other, export images of the map if you'd like to use it for later.

Dtil has a function that lets you re-hide squares, so hiding part of it and then mining that invisi-square should activate the feature.
