Since this site has taken on a life of its own now... I HIGHLY recomend that we start... a SUCCESION game of this! Someone needs to start a map and begin passing it around...

Just tHINK of the potential for "fun" in a succesion game on this map!

I'll handle it if you guys want, but I've already got about a year or so under my fort's belt. We're running finely enough with 31 dwarves, and we have a smattering of narrow goblin gear that we traded in exchange for steel armor so that we can have four swordsdwarves armed and trained. We also set up a trap corridor, and based the fort around the pit, with a large lake being made in it.

Also, I think I should get dibs on the first turn. After that, I'm not in the listings.

Ok, so I'm going for an all-glass fortress to replace the pit, 47 tiles diameter to fit snugly inside the pit embark tile, with prominent use of circles. I've had 16 fey moods/possessions and gotten 6 crowns out of them, as well as numerous images of circles, so the dwarves seem well on board with the plan. I expect it to be 25 stories tall, so about 50K glass blocks total needed. I've got 3,000 installed already. With only 21 laborers, I can have two legendary glassmakers turning out blocks with 10 haulers bringing them sand from 20 tiles away. If I try and get a 3rd legendary glassmaker going, I run out of manpower between meals and sleep and whatnot. 

I'm finishing up the ground level today (same z-level as the top of the magma pipe) and I've already largely finished the z+5 magma/water reservoir (currently using it for general storage as I clear out other levels):

Water on left, magma on right. Each circular structure within the reservoir is a top to bottom pipe that will allow me to route water/magma to other parts of the fortress or to dump it fairly quickly into the chasm at the bottom of the pit. The circular structure in the center (where the two temporary grey bridges are) will have a vertical power shaft, stairs, and two pump ladders. There's really not enough stair access in there for the whole fortress, so there will be other staircases between levels as appropriate, but there will be from 2-4 staircases in the center structure top to bottom.

I started with z+5 to get a roof over the pit and because I was having trouble digging out the levels above ground level between orc sieges. I haven't moved magma yet but built a peninsula out onto the pipe where the smelters are.

Thats really nice looking and sounds like a solid plan. You should run your own community fort and keep us updated.

So far, so good on this map. I have gotten several goblin ambushes in 203. Along with a Hammerlord that has raked in 15 kills, 2 of which are dwarf training kills, and one human from the last ambush. I currently have him decked out in Adamantine Plate armor and an Adamantine warhammer, and just watched him run into a goblin ambush and 1 shot them all. Each one went FLYING 20+ tiles after one whack with his hammer. By far my most epic dwarf ever, and have gave him the name Dr. Dman.
I had one other Hammerlord that got killed during the first ambush to a goblin archer. He didnt even get a chance to smack anyone.

This is BY far the best site I have ever played on, its so much fun.

Oh ya, and 21 dead dwarves and 2 kidnapped children

Epic Edit: So my game froze just after the 3 ambushes due to my drivers for my vid card freaking out, and lost a bit of progress, so I decided to say Screw it and breach the HFS.

So I ended up getting 5 Spirits of fire that killed all of my legendary miners. I immediately put my small military on duty and sent them down to the area. The first one on the scene was Dr. Dman. Now I figued this was going to be a suicide mission, but fun none the less. Much to my surprise, Dr. Dman ran in and proceded to one shot ALL FIVE of the demons. Killed every single one of them and didnt receive so much as a SCRATCH on him. This guy is getting his own room, Tomb, everything. Do you guys think he might be listed in Legends at all? I hope so.

Edit again: After posting this, he ran into 6 more of them, and died quite quickly after dodging 3 or 4 fireballs. I am sad now, and it looks like this fort is about to die.

Sigh.. I've no idea how to post screenshots but my fortress has been lost once again.  Having evaded the giant spider for an entire year.. the orc horde arrived to seige me and my 17 dwarves.  I had a bridge (well 3) built over the bottomless pit giving me complete safety in the event of a seige.  NO ONE HIT THE LEVER.  So the end result was orcs come in and kill everyone in their sleep.  YAY :p

I've reclaimed the fort to find many happy friendlynonhostile orcs roaming around the countryside.  I suppose they've eatten enough dwarf for awhile.

Hit your print screen button and open up paint and paste (ctrl + v) and thats an easy way to take a screen shot in just about anything on windows.

Step-by-step instuctions on how to post screencaps of DF on the forums:
1) Open your DF copy.
2) Load your save.
3a) Hit alt+print screen if you're using windows
3b) Hit apple+shift+4 (if I recall correctly) and press space once. Click on the DF window. Or, apple+shift+3 if you're playing full-screen. Go to option 4b)
3c) On Linux and whatnot, you have to bind a key to take a screencap. Beats me how to, but if you're into Linux, you'll prolly figure it out. As far as I google'd, it automatically creates pics for you, so go to 4b)
4a) Create a new picture file, in windows, by right clicking in your DF folder and selecting the Bit Map Picture option. Right click the created file, open with paint, ctrl-v the picture. Save the picture AS PNG, exit paint.
4b) Your operating system will create a picture file for you atuomatically, locate it (on Macs, it should be on the desktop, no idea about Linux)
5) Go to a free website which you can upload (and link from) pictures. http://www.imageshack.us/ is what came to my mind at first.
6) Upload the file, then copy the link from the resulting page.
7) Log on to the forums, locate the thread you found, and paste the link

I added this parameter set to my world gen, then genned it.  What i get is obviously this world, and I can find this location, but not all of the features are there, or the're in a different place.

I went and downloaded the most recent version of DF and did the gen unmodded and it looks like everything is there!!

Even if you have the seed and all of the generation paramaters, it still is not guarenteed that you will get the EXACT same world, as is the nature of random generation. I belive the only 100% sure fire way would be to have the exact same system that the seed was origionally generated on, same hardware and os, version of the game, same system time ect.. But even then I could be wrong.

The human liason was quite awesome, he had 2 pages of elf bone trinkets, 24 elven kills when i checked legends and he had only killed elves in his life nothing else. you gotta love these elf haters

Well, who doesn't hate elves? I removed my elves ability to talk so that they send ambushes all the time.

Well so far in my fort I have had 2 waves of migrants munched by the GCS before the fireimps decided to join in - promptly setting the world (including GCS) alight.

In other news, the giant bat managed to pick off a couple of my peasants and kill all the drafted woodcutters I sent after it without sustaining any injuries. However one woodcutter managed to kill it in one hit or something by himself after the others had all failed (must've got lucky i guess).
